Satin originates from China and was originally a weave derived from silk. One of the most expensive fabrics of the time, Satin derives its name from the Arabic name for the town in which Satin was first discovered i.e. Quanzhou. The name Satin, refers to the weave of the fabric and not any raw material. Due to the rich look and feel and exquisite texture of the material, Satin was preferred by royalty. It became exclusive to royalty because the masses could not afford such an exquisite product.
Red and Beige Satin Viscose Jacquard and Net Readymade DressAlthough Satin fabric is made from silk fibers, the finished products are vastly different. Satin has a distinctive glossy and smooth look on one side (which is the one that is shown outwardly when the fabric is used) while the other side is dull matte. Post the discovery of cotton and wool, Satin was made using these fibers as well, which turned out to be a lot more economical than using silk as the raw material. After the advent of the Industrial Revolution, the preferred fiber was polyester. Due to the smoothness of the fabric, it is quite a challenge to use it for embellishments.

There are many different types of satin in the market. Baronet Satin, Charmeuse Satin, Duchess Satin, Gattar Satin, Faconne Satin, Farmer’s Satin, Surf Satin, Sultan Satin and Slipper Satin are the various types that are distinguished from each other on the basis of the materials used in the making along with the kind of weave it features.
