The Duchess of Cambridge has carved out a reputation for mastering the art of high/ low dressing, opting for everything from ASOS and Topshop to Alexander McQueen and Jenny Packham. At the gala concert in Windsor tonight held in celebration of The Queen’s 90th birthday, the Duchess continued to blend budgets, choosing a £3,450 white lace prom dresses uk by Dolce and Gabbana and a postbox red swing jacket from Zara. The Duchess complimented her designer/ high street mix with diamond drop earrings and a chic low chignon.

Priced at a rather affordable £49.99 , Kate’s jacket is described online as “a blazer with back pleat” and at the time of writing was still available to buy in every size apart from small. The dress- made in Italy- is described on Net-a-Porter as a “romantic choice for special events” and comes with a nipped in waist and tiered skirt. Its design is typical of the ladylike signature of Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce who are famed in the fashion world for their celebration of all things Italian; recent themes for their Milan fashion week shows have included the history of Sicily and the joys of traditional Mediterranean food. At the time of writing, tonight's lace dress cotton dress was sold out or low in stock in all sizes.

The Duchess has long been a fan of Zara. She’s been seen wearing pieces by the Spanish high street behemoth for everything from official engagements and on more casual off-duty days. In fact, it was a cornflower blue Zara dress which the Duchess turned to as she departed for her honeymoon in 2011. Meanwhile, the Duchess own numerous pairs of Zara’s skinny jeans- recently wearing a khaki style on a trip to Kaziranga National Park during April’s royal tour of India and Bhutan.

It seems that the Duchess has also developed a penchant for the feminine lace prom dresses online which are a mainstay of Dolce and Gabbana's collections. Tonight is third occasion that Kate has worn a similar design by the duo. In November last year, she opted for an elegant black version for the Festival of Remembrance. A month earlier, she wore a £1,850 plum-hued Dolce and Gabbana shift to greet President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan of China at a reception during their state visit to Britain.

Kate wasn’t the only resplendently stylish royal at tonight’s concert. Her Majesty the Queen was wearing a sea green skirt suit with lace overlay, designed by her senior dressmaker and personal assistant Angela Kelly. Her signature accessories- a pair of pristine white gloves, a patent black Launer handbag and black low-heels- were also out in force for the occasion.
