The Art of the Well-Groomed Man

It has long been said that people do not get a second chance for a first impression. Whether we agree with it or not, others do judge us by our appearance. That is why it is so important for us guys to stay impeccably groomed. Here are some tips for the stylish gentleman.

Power Of The Shower

Before the advent of indoor plumbing, bathing was a difficult chore. Families had to pack water from a creek or well and heat it on the stove. As you can imagine, it took forever to fill up a galvanized tub. However, bathing has always been an important part of personal hygiene (yes, even during the Middle Ages) — thus the popularity of bath houses throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

With modern plumbing, water heaters, and fragranced soaps, bathing has become vastly more convenient. In other words, you have no excuses — try to bathe or shower every day. It is personal preference whether you do it in the morning or before you go to bed. Showering not only washes off the stink, but also removes dirt and dead skin cells off your body. You will smell great and also enjoy fewer acne flare-ups.

Shaving Tips

Although beards have recently come back into vogue, the clean-shaven look is timeless. In ancient times, men used sharpened stones and metal to keep their faces smooth. In modern times, you have a few (more advanced) shaving options. If you want to do it the old-fashioned way, try a straight razor. With a little skill and practice, it will give you the closest shave that you ever got from standard razors.

Another great option for shaving is a safety razor. They use disposable blades and are quicker and safer to use than a straight razor (Harry’s and Dollar Shave Club are killing it right now). There are also a lot of guys who say that they love the results of an electric razor. Choose the one that makes you feel the most comfortable.

However you choose to shave, for best results, cover your face with a warm towel before shaving. It will soften your facial hair so it cuts better. After you apply your favorite brand of shaving cream, be sure to shave in the same direction as your beard grows to prevent ingrown hairs. Rinse your face with cool water and apply aftershave, followed by a quality moisturizer.

Growing Facial Hair

Men’s facial hair trends change with fashion. During some eras, such as in the Roman Empire, smooth faces were the norm. Other cultures, like the Imperial Russians, gauged a man’s social status by his beard length. If you opt to have facial hair, you must keep it as neatly groomed as the hair on top of your head.

Get started by letting your beard grow out for about a month. (You still need to keep your neck shaved.) Once you’ve achieved full growth, an experienced barber can keep your beard trimmed and in good shape. If you prefer the DIY route, you can learn to trim it yourself. For daily maintenance, keep your beard properly shampooed and conditioned with a good beard oil.

It’s Wise to Moisturize

As we mentioned a couple paragraphs ago, guys need lotion, too. After all, men’s skin has the same care needs as ladies’. If you shave your face regularly, you’re actually one step ahead — shaving does double duty by getting rid of facial hair and scrubbing off dead skin cells. The best time to add a moisturizer is after you shave. It will keep your skin healthy and will reduce premature wrinkles. If your skin is oily and prone to breakouts, you should pick a moisturizer that is formulated for it. Don’t stop at your face and neck, however; apply lotion all over your body to keep your skin in prime condition.

Put the “Man” Back in Manicure

The idea of male manicures may make some guys cringe, because it does not seem very macho. However, there is nothing sexy about a man going around with dirty, unkempt fingernails. The same goes with pedicures. Who wants to see a guy in sandals who has toenails like a T. rex? You may be surprised at how many stylish guys get manicures and pedicures. If you still feel put off by going to a salon, at least make a point of regularly trimming, filing, and smoothing your nails at home.

Keep a Million-Dollar Smile

No doubt, you already have been brushing your teeth every day since you were a kid. The minimum should be once in the morning and once before you go to bed. It would be even better if you brushed after each meal. Do not forget the benefits of flossing, using mouthwash, and scraping your tongue. Making appointments with your dentist every 6 months will ensure that you have a dashing smile and more importantly, a healthy set of teeth and gums. If your smile is a little stained from coffee or tea, you may also want to consider investing in a professional whitening treatment.

Hair Do’s and Don’ts

Not everyone looks good in the latest hair trends. Guys must choose a style that suits them as an individual, while still looking neat. Do not assume that the hairstyle you had in college still fits you today — changes in weight, profession, and modern trends should be taken into consideration. A hairstyle that is kept neatly says a lot about you. Whichever hairstyle you choose, make regular trips to the barber to get it trimmed at least once a month. Take good care of your mane with a shampoo and conditioner that is formulated for your hair type.

Invest in a quality trimmer for those bothersome hairs in the nose and ears. Uni-brows are definitely out. Tame your brows and give them a little bit of shape with your trimmer and a small brow brush.

Don’t Forget Your Common Scents

Just about every hygiene product you use has a scent of its own. Your soap, deodorant, and lotions not only have to compete with each other, but they also mess with your cologne. The best way to avoid smelling like a cosmetic counter is to buy unscented toiletries. They work just as hard without a competing smell.

Since everyone’s body chemistry is different, the cologne that smells great on your buddy may not work for you. Find a scent that you like and make it your signature cologne. Remember that the smell of cologne should be subtle, never overpowering. If you can smell your own cologne, you are probably wearing too much. That can be just as offensive as body odor to others.

What To Wear

Fashion taste is as different as the people who wear it. You do not have to go bankrupt to build a proper wardrobe. Beware of buying everything according to current trends. They will quickly change and you will end up with a closet full of outdated duds.

Choose timeless pieces that can be worn differently to create a new outfit. Wear things that look right for your body type. You can always find great fashion ideas by perusing men’s clothing websites and your favorite department store. When you visit a local thrift store, you may stumble upon great pieces for a fraction of the cost. Wear clothes and accessories that are age-appropriate and highlight your individual style. And don’t forget quality undergarments like Underfit undershirts and boxer briefs — a polished look always starts with a good foundation.

A stylish man glows with determination and confidence. And never forget — your best accessories are charm and a sincere smile.
