I’ve just had it on good authority (this month’s edition of Marie Claire, to be precise), that the key jewellery trends for AW10 will be HUGE necklaces and rather quirky pendants. This is great news for people like me, who are quite bony and pale up top – summer’s “barely there” look was not a great one for us.

So, I’ve gone shopping for some humongous pieces which are guaranteed to give you neck strain – but hey, you’ll look fantastic!

To start us off, how about this sparkly gold crystal love star necklace? The chain itself has a multitude of stars on it, leading to the huge star pendant which is dotted with crystals and has the word “Love” engraved on it. Available from Seasonsonline for £4.99.

Or what about this unusual mix of art deco and Aztec? This plunging necklace is dotted with crystals and is priced at £12.99.

For a more unusual pendant, I like this leopard necklace. Set in gold tone, theleopard pendant itself has a sprinkling of crystals which really catch the light and sparkle. Only £5.99.

And last up, watch out Madonna! The eighties style swinging cross necklace is making its mark once more in the fashion stakes. This one is a mid-length silver necklace with a bead chain, holding a large red and green Latin style cross with crystal edges and decorated with a sparkly heart. This one is really unusual and don’t tell anyone but I’ve sneaked one home to jazz up my autumn wardrobe – imagine it with a plain black shift dress and cape coat? It’s only £5.99.

The key to wearing big necklaces is to ensure that you don’t begin to resemble an American rapper. It’s not all about the bling, it’s about choosing one particular necklace which you know will accessorise that particular outfit perfectly. Keep it simple, and you won’t go far wrong.

Oh – and it might be advisable to stock up on neck braces for this forthcoming season, girls! Also remember to err on the side of caution when eating soup at dinner parties or leaning forward into your G&T. Could be a disaster in the making!
