Tech packs are the most important documents when communicating to manufacturers as to how you want your garments made.

Critical to the product life-cycle management (PLM) of any garment it is crucial that the tech pack format you are using contains all the information needed.

If you are not explicitly clear in all the product details then you are leaving it open to interpretation. Something you want to avoid.

Get it wrong and the critical path of your clothing is at risk or worse, you might miss all your deadlines.

Your Tech Pack Format

You have to make sure that you are using the right format in communicating with your factory.

From experience I know.

Having worked in manufacturing in India I spent a considerable amount of time translating tech packs for clothing that were sent from buyers.

I don’t mean translating into another language – before you ask.

When a new season was starting we would receive the buyers requirements for sampling and product development. But this information needed to be reorganised and presented in a way that everyone within the supply chain could execute their part of the products development.

The benefits of this were huge.

• Buyers and clients would receive a minimal amount of questions concerning their products development
• Suppliers had the information they needed so that all the components for the products were developed in time
• Critical Paths, product milestones and deadlines were met
• Approvals from buyers were fast tracked
• Product development costs were slashed
• Clients received the products they wanted

But then I had a unique perspective as with both buying office and manufacturing experience I knew what was needed by both sides.
