Talent and Aptitude in Modelling

The modelling and talent management industries are among the most bewildering paths that a young person can aspire for. There are numerous ways in and it’s never really made totally clear how the famous models got their status in the world, but two things are obvious – you need to look good, and be likeable. The thing that the top models share in common – as you can see from any interview online – is that they’re not overly pretentious. They may be disliked because people are jealous, or they were nasty on a reality TV show, but the majority are generally quiet, nice people who manage their reputations well and don’t step out of line.

Talent comes in several forms, the ability to look good in anything, the ability to manage personal relationships and also business ones, and being able to know opportunity when you see it. On the flipside, talent management agencies need to know talent when they see it. These talents complement each other like a jigsaw puzzle fitting together, and when they match up perfectly, the results can be life changing for both the model and the agency. If you love your own image, and you spend a lot of time looking in the mirror – this doesn’t constitute an aptitude for modelling. However, it does show that you have confidence in your look. This is a key factor for any aspiring model to have. Like a yawn, confidence is infectious. Over-confidence is a disease though, as you will have noticed in your personal life – over-confident people often attract negative attention from the quieter types. Talent management agencies and photographers prefer to deal with people with great inter personal skills – people with whom strong working relationships can be built.

To find out whether you have a real aptitude for modelling, you should have a portfolio taken or at least take a good camera out with a friend and get some posed photos in a good location. Old parts of cities and forests make for the most striking backdrops for this kind of photo shoot. Whether you can use these photos when applying to big modelling agencies depends on the agency itself, but some might accept them as a precursor to an interview or test shoot. Check out your local agencies online and find out what they are looking for. If they’re close enough, why not just pop in and see what their offices look like!
