For those who do not know: Sahaj path is a series of children’s books, written by Rabindranatha Tagore, the litterateur who is worshiped as God for every Bangali. The Sahaj Path stories as simple tales or narrations by Tagore. Most Bengalis learn to read and form proper sentences through these stories, and have a special nostalgic value. To have those writings, and the black and white images created by Tagore on sarees will indeed be special.

This new sarees collection at the Biswa Bangla stores is to be available by the name Banglashree, which literally means, “the beauty of Bangla”; considering the sarees will have designs inspired by the stories of every Bangali’s beloved children’s book, it can be assumed that the word ‘Bangla’ in the name denotes the beautiful and rich Bengali language.

This nomenclature was by Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, and a patron of literature and art. She has actively made contributions to creating logos and names for the schemes and products by the Government, which have been widely appreciated. Banerjee has always shown interest in popularizing Bengal’s traditions on an international scale. Biswa Bangla is one such scheme dealing with everything from textiles and handlooms to art and food.

The CM of Bengal, who has always maintained the signature style of simple white cotton sarees, has shown great interest in case of Banglasree sarees, too, especially in the designing process, while the textile and handloom craftsmen of Bengal are consulting with the Research and Development Wing of the Biswa Bangla Marketing Corporation Limited to try out the designs that are to be used for the final products. There are also plans to export these latest sarees, after the designer drapes hit the stores.

Artisans of Bengal have been welcoming towards this new concept, and are extremely excited to incorporate this design into the new line of sarees. Sahaj Path-inspired prints will not be the only design on this new line. There will be other patterns, as well. Besides, the craftsmen have also been encouraged to bring their innovative ideas and concepts.
