Anumber fitness experts believe that one has to consume meat and seafood in order to gain a better physique. There is, however, a growing number of people across the globe who are turning vegan or vegetarian in order to reap benefits of leading a healthier lifestyle.

In India, more than 40% of the population is vegetarian, which is more than the total number of vegetarians all over the world, according to a report published by raw-food-health.net in 2004.

Bollywood actors are a constant source of fitness motivation for many--and this industry too, has seen a wave of vegetarian actors, who are as fit as a fiddle.

Here's a list of vegan/vegetarian Bollywood stars, who rock fit and fabulous bodies.

Yami Gautam

The actress, who has recently taken to physical fitness in a major way, is also a vegetarian and has one of the most athletic bodies in Bollywood. Her social-media accounts are a great source of inspiration to those who want to understand what a healthy vegetarian diet should be like.

Richa Chadha

Richa Chadha is a vegan, and follows a lot of alternative styles of eating, to lead a healthier lifestyle. The actress, in several of her interviews has vocally expressed her intricate understanding of following a healthy lifestyle, and achieving a fit body without consuming any meat. She's also an avid animal-lover and swears against all forms of animal-cruelty.

Talking about her decision to turn vegan, "I remember looking at petrified faces of small chickens as they pecked away at each other, being transported in tiny, cramped cages that offered them no respite from the scorching sun or rain or the merciless winter of the north. I was vegetarian for this reason. I couldn't bear to think that an animal would have to die in order for me to fill my stomach when I already had countless plant-based options.

But it was last year, in the month of November that I became vegan. And I have since realised there's no better food for the homo-sapiens than the vegan diet," Richa told the Indian Express.

Sonam Kapoor

The tinsel-town fashionista sure has a figure that most desire. Also branded as the Hottest Vegetarian of 2016 by PETA India, Sonam turned vegan out of her compassion for animals.

The DNA reported the actress stating, "I've been vegetarian for many years, but I became vegan this year. I believe in making compassionate choices. So much so, I am having soya milk coffee now, I don't even have dairy."

Kangana Ranaut

The actress was always a vegetarian, but later realised her allergy towards dairy products, turning into a vegan for some time. Kangana, who also endorsed fitness brands, has one of the fittest bodies in the industry.

The actress, who turned vegan for six months, told DNA, "I was vegan for six months. It was an interesting phase, and I never felt as good as I did during that time. I would love to go back to being a full-time vegan, but it's a bit hard here in India. The products are not available in restaurants that cater to vegans."

Lisa Haydon

Undoubtedly, Lisa Haydon has one of the hottest bodies in the industry. Haydon, even after becoming a mother, still manages to make people look up to her as a fitness role model. A lot of this has to be attributed to her turning vegan for a healthier lifestyle.

Shahid Kapoor

Almost a decade ago, Shahid Kapoor picked on the book Life Is Fair by Brian Hines, gifted to him by his father, Pankaj Kapoor, who is a practicing Radha Soami. Radha Soamis are ardent believers of vegetarianism, and stand against animal-cruelty.

The book changed his perspective towards meat, turning him into a vegetarian. Last year, the actor, in an attempt to adopt an even healthier lifestyle, turned vegan. His dedication for fitness and healthy eating habits drove him to work on his own fitness app called V-Fit, as reported by Mid-Day. "Celebrity apps are the in thing. Shahid strongly believes in the vegan way of life and wants his fans to reap the benefits as well. It was in early 2000s that he took to vegetarianism, and he could feel the difference. His current diet comprises protein-rich fruits and vegetables," a source close to the actor was reported saying.

With these celebs proving how healthy plant-based diet can be, one can only expect a rise in the number of vegetarians across the country.Read more at:sexy wedding dresses | strapless wedding dresses
