It is the first day of the new school year and more than a million pupils sit on the desks after the holidays. Morning rush in combination with rush hour offers many dangers, and so in front of schools supervised at least in the first days of school municipal officers.

The number of parents who drive children to school by car is increasing. And in big cities or large schools with a wide catchment area, a traffic drama takes place every day. Dozens of cars approach the sidewalk, park at the curbs. Those drivers who do not find a place stand on the so-called "blinkers" where they can. And little schoolboys are running between the cars.

As in previous years, the municipal police should supervise the traffic situation in front of the school in the first school week.

Throughout the school year in Prague, approximately 110 crossings will remain under the supervision of police officers every weekday between 7:15 and 8:00.

Hostivar's primary school is far from being the only institution where, in addition to the planned curriculum, children learn to fight for survival in the morning traffic jungle.

1.4 million pupils

About 107,800 children will enter the first classes; in total, approximately 953,500 pupils will attend primary schools, which is approximately 12,500 more than last year. About 409,000 pupils should be enrolled in secondary schools, ie by around 5,000 more year-on-year.

Children copy adults

Mass raids are a daily color for many Czech schools. Some parents are already complaining about the mamataxi phenomenon. Shortly before eight o'clock in the street in front of the entrance to the school are constipated - from the parent taxi stands one child after another. The car brakes in one lane, the child jumps up and quickly crosses the street - a situation that usually happens in front of most schools. And it's far from safety.

Especially in these places, the rules of the road should be strictly observed in the morning. Schoolchildren copy adults, and if they see a road crossing the crossing, it is very likely that next time they will. Every child must be seated and fastened in a suitable car seat, even if you are going to school around the corner. At school, let him always exit through the door to the sidewalk.

Unfortunately, strict adherence to the rules often does not happen in front of schools. The rush and lack of suitable places to drop a child often result in a stop at a pedestrian crossing, a stopping place or a confusing corner. It is dangerous and it is a negative example not only for the children being transported but also for their classmates.

The dangerous trend of importing children to the entrance of the school is responding to the non-profit organization Prague Mother, which organizes the campaign Walk to school. In this way, educational institutions in the metropolis can enter the competition for the class where pupils go most.

The organization also conducted a questionnaire survey in the framework of the Safe Travel project last year, in which 1,560 children and 940 parents participated. It showed that about a quarter of schoolchildren were taken to school. Most of these children live long distances. However, thirteen percent of those who drive to school regularly live within one kilometer of the school, eight percent less than half a kilometer.

A child can be unpredictable

The dangerous behavior of children on the road is their unpredictability, coupled with speed and rashness. Children run into the road more often or look into the mobile phone screen. Due to their low height, drivers can easily overlook them between parked cars, bushes or traffic signs.

The Ten Commandments to help protect them

Be a role model for your child. Dangerous behavior easily learns from you.

Teach the child the correct way to cross the road.

Choose the safest route to school. Walk with your child several times to alert them to dangerous areas.

Dress the children visibly, with reflective material elements.

Do not let children run on the road or after crossing.

Never drive with a pram where you cannot see yourself.

Reduce speed around schools and playgrounds.

Wake up even when children are on the sidewalk.

Do not overtake the tram at an island-free stop.

Do not run the bus at the bus stop.

"Parents should instill safe roadway principles for children from pre-school age. One of the most important lessons is not to enter the road outside the crossing. Children should never enter the crossing but must wait for the drivers to give them a priority. At the same time, it is also necessary for the parents who are the biggest role model to behave in the same way," says Lukas Hutta from the Lifebuoy Association.

Similarly, drivers should also be vigilant. In places like schools, playgrounds, or densely populated places, they should be even more cautious than usual. "It's not just about running into the road outside the crossing. For example, after a road sign on an island, the child may not be visible at all, and even if the speed limit is maintained, the driver may not respond in time. Therefore, we recommend slowing and sharpening in hazardous areas," adds Hutta.

Visibility can also be improved by appropriate reflective clothing and reflective elements on clothing or school briefcases, which are today without problems to find. "Children who go to school on their own will be helped if their parents walk through the house and alert them to dangerous sections," advises Veronika Krajsová, President of the Lifebuoy Association, which brings together rescue services and other institutions with which it develops and implements projects. on information, education and prevention in the areas of current risks and emergencies.

Beware of children behind the tram

Tram and bus stops are, particularly at risk. With them, drivers have to count on the fact that children can enter the road outside the crossing and without looking around because they want to catch their connection. There is also a danger of disembarking passengers. "If the tram is at a stop without an island, the driver is obliged to stop behind it even if the door is closed. If there are more tram sets at the stop, it stops after the last one. The driver can only start after all passengers have left the area, the tram closes the door and starts moving," recalls Krajsova.

Overtaking of standing buses also deserves special attention. A bus at a bus stop can only be overtaken if the bus stop is right by the sidewalk. Even in this case, however, it is necessary to slow down and count on the fact that children can run outside the bus and the crossing. If the bus is carrying children and is marked with the appropriate sign, it must not be overtaken at any stop.
