Snowfall or fog, combined with fast falling dark, is a mix that can contribute to the tragedy. In recent days, many accidents involving pedestrians have occurred throughout Poland, who, despite their obligation, did not have retro-reflective tapes on them.
Police officers remind you that pedestrians moving around outside the built-up area are required to wear reflective vests. For the lack of such elements, a fine from PLN 20 to even PLN 500 may be imposed.
The winter period is particularly dangerous for pedestrians due to early darkness and often-difficult road conditions - atmospheric precipitation, fogs. Reflective material give a chance for a much earlier reaction of the driver when the pedestrian is noticed on the road - informs the Municipal Police Headquarters. Uniforms are encouraged to wear flares also in the city. Why is it so important? The reflector placed on the clothes or handbag increases the visibility of the pedestrian located near the passage, which further increases its safety.
Pedestrian dressed in a dark outfit is seen by the driver of the vehicle from a distance of about 40 meters. The pedestrian, wearing reflective clothing, becomes visible even from a distance of 150 meters - police officers say and appeal for consideration. Remember, these extra meters often allow the driver to slow down and safely bypass the pedestrian.
What does the law say? From August 31, 2014, all pedestrians who move along dusk outside the built-up area must have a reflective vest placed in a visible way for the drivers. An exception is provided in the regulations: a pedestrian can move around outside the built-up area without retro-reflective elements, if it is on a road intended for pedestrians only or on the sidewalk. The new rule does not apply in the residential area - there the pedestrian uses the entire width of the road and takes precedence over the vehicle.
Reflective products may include attachments for clothing, headbands, vests, and leashes. It is important to place them: the reflectors are recommended to be placed at the level of knees, hands, around the center of the chest and back - then we will be sure that they are clearly visible to other road users - informs the National Police Headquarters.
