Keeping up with new trends and styles can be incredibly difficult, but there is something to be said for dressing in a way that is uniquely you. There is, of course, nothing wrong with keeping in step with the fashion world, but that may not be what works for you. There are few rules that define how you must dress, so here are a few reasons your favorite look can be the best look for you.

Comfort

If you’ve ever taken a ride on a plane, bus, or subway car filled to capacity, you know that people act very differently when they are uncomfortable. We often get irritable or anxious when placed in an uncomfortable situation, which often stops us from putting our best foot forward. The same principle applies to your clothes. If you’re uncomfortable in your clothes, no matter how fashion-forward they are, human nature may betray your desired aesthetic. The same can be said of heavy makeup or cumbersome jewelry. An easy smile, relaxed body language, and an air of confidence can easily have you turning more heads than a designer dress or chic shoes.

Authenticity

If your ethnicity or culture includes unique clothing, you can use that to your advantage. Whether it’s an alpaca poncho, a wool sweater, or sheepskin boots, clothes that have an air of authenticity are always impressive. Some of these unique styles can also be worn even if you don’t have any cultural ties to them. Obviously, you don’t want to be offensive, but as long as the clothes are appropriately sourced and aren’t culturally stereotyping or sacred, you should be in the clear. For example, you probably can’t pull off a poncho/sombrero combo, but you could easily wear some authentic Australian ugg boots without a problem. Fun fact: Ugg boots are a traditional style of boots that originated in Australia and not just a major fashion brand, so getting authentic ones can be a great look.

Personality

Sometimes the latest style just doesn’t work with what you’ve got. In the same way that a haircut with bangs doesn’t work for everyone, some fashion trends can look out of place or awkward depending on your features. Fortunately, dressing in clothes that compliment your unique shape, skin tone, and even eye color can easily blow a trendy look out of the water. The same goes for clothes that show off your personality. If slacks, suspenders, and a bow tie look and feel great on you, run with it. An aesthetic that gives you confidence is guaranteed to make people notice.

Fashion isn’t always about the latest trends or exclusive brands. The best looks are often the ones that match the wearer’s aesthetics and personality. That’s why a look that vibes with who you are is one that won’t let you down.
