Rachel Sin

That's So New York - I've been feeling a little like a fashion scout over the course of the past two or three weeks; simply because I seem to keep stumbling across designer after designer, that of which have frequently left me pondering something along the lines of "why on earth has this label still not had its big break?" as it seems that even though I've been graced with an unthinkable amount of talent whilst flicking through a number of stores and designer profiles, it is not unusual to see that the designer has simply grabbed a position at her local fashion week, in addition to the highly respected events; that of which include Paris, London and New York fashion week. I can't help but thinking "are we in a position where it is only the highly respected and established designers who editors along with campaign and event managers listen to? meaning that the newcomers are simply being thrown aside?". Either way, I won't deny the fact that it does occasionally frustrate me a little.

Moving on from my mild rant, I wanted to introduce a designer who I began speaking with around five months ago (mid-April) and has been growing on me ever since; that designers name? Rachel Sin. Rachel Sin is a Canadian, Ottawa-based architect turned self-taught fashion designer. Recently whilst watching an interview which introduced Rachel, she mentioned that her primary demographic which she targets when designing is the "modern working woman who knows what she wants and knows her own style" adding that she believes that the time she spent studying architecture has had a huge influence on her work, as when designing she always thinks of a "woman who is attending an event in a modern building" and then designs her collections around what she thinks that same woman may wear to the event, consequently complimenting the building itself, whilst also fitting in with an alternative yet practical concept. In my opinion, the vision which Rachel has when designing is most definitely projected into each piece and the overall outcome, as when looking at each piece I do tend to place them in the wardrobe of an assistant or company manager and caption them as "this is what I'm going to wear to my friends party this weekend" type pieces.

As pure usual, I couldn't help myself when it came to choosing a handful of pieces which I admire; despite the fact I have chosen the pieces which are perhaps aimed towards the younger woman (referring to my youthful instincts), I personally feel that as long as you're not a seventy-year-old grandma who enjoys knitting on the odd occasion, whilst waiting for the hairdresser to fix your white perm, then you could most probably pull them off. Onto the images ...
