Purchasing Jobs

Many jobs in fashion require degrees, but equally some don't, and so many people are put off applying for jobs by the belief that they don't have what they need to get it. One area of the fashion retail industry where this is true is purchasing jobs. Purchasers, or buyers as they're also known, are required to travel a lot as much of their work will be influenced by trends that are occurring abroad. This means that dedication is high on the list of traits needed to be a fashion buyer, and personality is something that is often worth more than a qualification in the industry.

With such a competitive role comes the need for experience, and in particular an all round experience of how retail operates from the ground floor up. Many people who have succeeded in retail have done so from starting on the shop floor, and this experience should not be discounted. If you work in purchasing in any industry you will spend a lot of your time negotiating with suppliers, and so communication skills are essential to ensuring this runs smoothly.

As well speaking with suppliers, you will be expected to meet them on your numerous travels. Whilst traveling to the world's best fashion shows is as glamorous as you can get without actually being on the catwalk, there is a commercial element involved, and being able to combine your passion with your business responsibilities is very important. But it seems that if you were lucky enough to land a job as a purchaser for a good fashion house, this wouldn't be too much of a chore..!
