Madonna launches Material Girl Clothing Line

Madonna and her daughter Lourdes recently launched a clothing line called “Material Girl” to department stores. Taylor Momsen from Gossip Girl is the face of the new Material Girl line. I have to say that I was pretty excited when I heard about Madonna’s designing venture especially when I found out that she was going to include pieces that represent Madonna’s 1980’s style such as lace mini dresses, leather jackets, cutout gloves, leather booties, crucifix necklaces, and mesh mini skirts. However my first question was, “why now?” I waited 25 years to buy her collection that I couldn’t possibly wear at my age…argh! As I started looking through the pieces in her collection it brought back so many memories of my past style choices. I actually wore mesh mini dresses, tons of jelly bracelets, cutout black lace gloves, mounds of necklaces, lace hair bows, and a leather jacket to emulate Madonna in the mid 1980s. I absolutely loved Madonna! My mother wasn’t so impressed with her taste in clothes or my desire to wear them. She was even less enthusiastic about her musical lyrics as she caught me singing in my room, “Like a Virgin…touched for the very first time…”, to an album I received as a birthday gift from my then best friend Anna Leddy. Of course my mother’s disapproval of Madonna’s music and clothes only made me love Madonna all the more!

Fast forward to Fall 2010 when Madonna’s fashion style of the mid 1980’s is again popular. Leather jackets, leather booties, lots of layered necklaces, lace leggings, ruffled miniskirts, and even lace cutout gloves are definitely in for Fall 2010. So the question is, “Was it just random that Madonna’s 80’s style is in fashion again or did the Material Girl bring her style back to fashion for Fall 2010?” A question I ponder as I look through Macy’s website at the Material Girl clothing line filled with the cutest mini dresses, skirts, tops, purses, jewelry, and shoes all reminiscent of Madonna’s 80’s fashion style. I do take note at how reasonably priced the Material Girl clothing line is; $15.00 lace mini dresses, $24.00 layered necklaces, and $32.00 studded purses. Although the line inspiration resembles the 1980’s, the decade of excess, the prices definitely reflect the financial times of 2010.

In the end it will be nostalgia for me to see girls dressed up like Madonna again. It will take me back to time when Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Cydni Lauper ruled the airwaves and MTV, when I got to wear lace mini dresses and jelly bracelets out in public, and when financial times were great!
