Oscar Recap

The big night came and now its over.  While Hollywood attended their fancy parties for a feel good time after all the excitement of the night, I was exhausted from the entire show and trying to keep up with my Oscar app.  Yes,  I know a little crazy but I wanted to have enough information for myself rather than reading the critics.  And yes, I’m sure some critics had a field day with their summation.  I on the other hand believe fair is fair and give credit where it is due.

As you know, the night started with the famous Red Carpet walk of  fame or shame. So who’s “Sunday Best” stood out from the rest? And who forgot to look in the mirror to make sure the dress was really what they wanted to wear? I begin with the 83rd Oscar host.

Anne Hathaway had several dresses for the night as I expected she would. Even though, the Red Valentino was gorgeous on the Red Carpet and showed spunk for wearing red on Red, I was not totally convinced this should have been her first choice.  How can a girl say no to the dress when the Designer walks the Red Carpet with you? Oh well.  Of the other designer dresses she wore, the ivory and silver embelished Givenchy, the electric blue Armani Prive, the burgundy Versace, the gunmetal beaded Tom Ford, the playful fringed one-shouldered Oscar de la Renta, 0r the beautiful black and white Vivienne Westwood, my pick for the Red Carpet would have been either the Armani Prive or the Haute Couture Givenchy.

Before we got to see all the other dresses Anne wore, we were graced with other dresses worn beautifully and some, I was not too sure whether like Anne, they should have chosen.  The following is the breakdown of our Red Carpet.

Gwyneth Paltrow : Silver Calvin Klien with a beautiful Louis Vuitton brooch on her hip. Sleek straight hair.  Red Carpet Worthy: Yes, simple and sleek is her new style. Though, I still would have liked a little more sculpturing to her hair for the Red Carpet.

Nicole Kidman: White and Silver Embellished Dior Couture with an 150 Karat Diamond Choker. Pony tail hair.  Red Carpet Worthy: Yes, but this dress made Nicole have hips out where they shouldn’t be for her slender frame. This was a miss in my book.

Halle Berry: Nude strapless Marchesa with Tulle train.  Red Carpet Worthy:Yes, but Halle looks so much better in color. And as much as I love her, this dress was also a miss for me.

Jennifer Lawrence: Red scoop neck Calvin Klien with a criscrossed back.  Red Carpet Worthy: Well done for the New Comer. Yet, a little bling on her neck and/or wrists would have sealed the deal for Best Dressed.

Mila Kunis: Elie Saab’s Lavender creation with lace bodice detailing and ruffle layering. Red Carpet Worthy: Absolutely. She’s beautiful in Black Swan and this dress was absolutely romantic and fluid as a ballerina. I must say the lavender color was a great compliment for her skin tone and the dress design complemented her figure.

Cate Blanchet: Givenchy Couture sculptured lavender and gold(?) arty dress.  Red Carpet Worthy: Yes. The color on the other hand was a whole other matter. Cate can wear most anything and still look elegant but the coloring of the dress was its undoing for many and for me.

Melissa Leo: White and Gold Metallic, Mark Bouwer Dress. Red Carpet Worthy: No. Great look for a costume party but not for the Red Carpet. Even Helena Bonham Carter’s, Colleen Atwood creation in honor of costume design, was a better couture dress.

Hailee Steinfeld: Nude dress with Tulle skirt, Marchesa Original. Red Carpet Worthy: A resounding Yes and so very age appropriate for the young  actress.  In my eyes, I would say she tied for the best dressed on the Red Carpet but I’m biased since I’m a mom of two little girls myself.

Florence Welch: Off White Lace Layered Valentino dress.  Red Carpet Worthy: No. The coloring was all wrong for her rich auburn hair.  Now the tangerine silk dress she wore for her stage performance was the dress she should have worn on the red carpet.

Michele Williams: White Beaded Channel dress.  Red Carpet Worthy: Yes. Wrong color choice for her, since her hair is that pale blond, her dress needed to pop instead of flop. Also, for a young actress the style of the dress was more matronly than needed to be and the length of the dress was off for her stature.

Jennifer Hudson: Tangerine Halter Versace. Red Carpet Worthy: Yes. Right Color, Wrong Fit.  I’m all for showing the world that you are proud of one’s newly found statuesque figure. However, the bodice on this dress did no favors for her tatas!

Scarlett Johansson: Burgundy Lace, Dolce and Gabbana.  Red Carpet Worthy: No. Great Color and cut out back detail, but her hair was way too messy.

Sandra Bullock: Red, Vera Wang with matching red alligator clutch.  Red Carpet: Definitely! My only problem was that she also needed a little something around her neck for a coup.

Hillary Swank: Two-tone Silver Mermaid Feathered Bottom, Gucci with matching hard silver clutch. Red Carpet Worthy: Yes. Well done. She was number 3 on my top five Best Dressed list.

Natalie Portman: Purple, V-neck line, Rodarte with matching Tiffany & Co. earrings.  Red Carpet Worthy: Absolutely. She was my Best Dressed.  This dress made getting dressed for the Oscars as an expecting mother absolutely effortless. Plus, she proved me right. She won for Best Actress.

Celine Dion: Silver Gunmetal, Armani Prive.  Red Carpet Worthy:Absolutely. I want to have twins and look like her. Her performance dress was also stunning. She tied for second place for the best dressed along with Gwyneth Paltrow.  Silver on these ladies was as hot as gold.

The Oscars both pleased and disappointed in so many ways. All things considered,  I can’t wait to see next year’s Red Carpet Fashion.
