Oscar Mania

As I sat doing research for this piece, my mind was bombarded with color choices, fabric choices, accessory choices. Two thoughts constantly nagged like a bee buzzing from one flower to another: Truly, how do all those actresses and actors decide on who will be their designer? How do they make their final choice of the dress from all the other dresses?

The prestigious honor of obtaining the coveted Oscar goes to those selected few that become masters at their craft and are recognized on Oscar night.  As Oscar has grown older, so have the viewing audience’s taste.  There are those movie buffs who watch the Oscars to see who gets the big win. On the other hand, there are those watching the Oscars for the glitterati. Not sure if that’s a word but it sounds apt. If you are like me though, you watch the Oscars not only for the glamor  but for the satisfaction of my favorite actress/actor/movie getting the well deserved accolade.

That said, this award demands respect. Over the years,  a slice of the viewing public have seemingly equated respect with being the best dressed. Surprisingly, both actresses and actors have acquiesced to their fan base and have upped the ante on dressing in their heightened “Sunday” best. Every actress and actor displays his or her own sense of style by the designer he or she chooses and his or her final choice.  Some actresses and actors leave the choice to their stylists in order not to deal with the anxiety or the hoopla. While others go shopping, try one dress on and if it fits, it gets bagged. Either way, the final choice should simply echo, ‘this is who I am and I like what I am in.’

This brings us to the ladies dresses. Hour after hour as I did my research, I saw dress after dress from designer after designer and from collection after collection.  Some dresses were beautiful beyond words and beautifully wearable, like Elie Saab’s sheer-covered blood red silk draped with silk tulle starting from one shoulder from his Fall 2010 collection. Some dresses were too couture and even bordered on the obscene and garish, like Jean Paul Gautier’s dress Rihanna chose for the Grammy’s. Don’t get me wrong, I like wacky couture and skin just like any other person. But like my Granny says, there is a time and a place for every thing. Actresses, take note, we do not need to see any wardrobe malfunctions. I even discovered one dress, a Givenchy creation, took an incredulous 4000 hours of sewing. Yes, I checked the number of zeros several times since I had just been watching tons of dresses.  One thing became quite clear after the dress/designer collection watching: being a spectator is a sweet deal; absolutely no stress.

So the following are my Hints for Oscar night dress:

- Asymmetrical dresses and One-shouldered dresses, with layering and/or draping,

- Sheer tulle over silk

- Platform  t-strapped sandals

- Purse of choice = hard beaded clutch

- Dress Color: Gold, Red, Dark Lavender/Mauve, Shimmering Green silk and of course Black

So, I like everyone else interested in the Oscars patiently await for my own Oscar Sunday evening: comfy pajamas, a glass of my favorite wine with yummy Smoked Gouda cheese, crackers and my TV. My Oscar picks: Natalie Portman for Black Swan, Colin Firth for The Kings Speech and Toy Story for Best Animated Film (even though my daughter M would totally say How to Train Your Dragon should win).
