Makeup and beauty products have never been more popular. As more and more products are launched, consumers are becoming more savvy when it comes to ingredients. This has led to increasing interest in natural plant-derived ingredients. Here are three fan favorites to get you started.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a contradiction: it is an oil that can help reduce acne and treat oily skin. It has a thin, water-like consistency and a strong yet refreshing scent. It has astringent qualities, which means that it gently reduces oil flow, clarifies and shrinks pores and reduces the size of blemishes. You need to be careful with tea tree oil, however. When applied at full strength directly to the skin, it can be so drying as to cause your skin to produce more oil. It is most effective when diluted with water or added to your favorite moisturizer.

Kaolin Clay

Kaolin is a secret ingredient in many mattifying products. It is featured in oil-blocking powders and foundations. The best way to maximize its effects is to use a weekly mask that includes it as a main ingredient. It absorbs excess oil and even pulls impurities out of pores. It even helps to treat and shrink existing blemishes. Don’t get too excited by the results and start using kaolin masks every day. As with tea tree oil, going overboard can result in uncomfortable tightness and, eventually, increased oil production.

Rosehip Oil

In an age of new, fun items like CBD products, timeless classics like rosehip oil can sometimes fall by the wayside. Rosehip oil has been used for thousands of years, and for good reason. It has natural anti-aging qualities and even encourages your skin to manufacture more of its own deep-penetrating healthy conditioning oils. It has a gentle astringent quality as well as antibacterial benefits that help clear up acne and prevent future breakouts. If pure rosehip oil is too heavy for you. try using rosewater as a toner after cleansing and before applying your moisturizer. This way, you’ll still get the acne-fighting benefits of rosehip oil but in a much lighter form.

Using natural makeup and skincare is great for both your skin and the environment. As you continue to explore natural products, you may find yourself getting involved in some of the ethical and environmental causes championed by your favorite brands. In this way, natural products enrich yourself as they enrich your beauty routine.
