My "WHY" Fashion Design

Hi there everybody, fellow fashion lovers, I sometimes try to explain in my head why do I want to be a fashion designer? This may seem like I'm not serious about being a fashion designer if this is something I'm frequently asking my self. Well first off, the reason I'm asking myself this all the time is because everybody looks at my desire to be a fashion designer as rather a joke, yes this is painful, the other reason is because I seek to find this unique drive I sense in myself as the major underlying reason why I want to be a fashion designer.

Sure, like all other designers, I love to create, love color, love clothes, love fashion, love art and love putting a 'look' together, love fabrics and love the excitement and theatrics, love the technicals behind the whole fashion world, I am an artist, period.

However, my unique reason that I've recently been able to refine into explanation is that as someone from an Islamic conversion background and a rather strangely double standard Islamic upbringing, I find fashion design to be something that's a way for me to address some significant issues in my life. First of all, the negative stereotype that muslim women have no sense of style, hurts and the reason it hurts is because most of the time it's unfortunately true although it doesn't need to be. Second of all, the way things were in my home, (not Islams fault per say but chosen practice ideals be the blame here) my sense of identity as a women is uncomfortable as well appearance wise, worth wise, and let's be frank here, sexual identity wise. And it simply shouldn't be that way. All this of course could breed many a lengthy debate on the hows and whys and ways this problem could be tackled, but I'll say this, for me the answer is fashion design.

Fashion design will be a way to create a new, unique, beautiful and practical for a woman's daily work, way to change the negative stereotypes women suffer from, especially Muslim women on a day to day basis. This is one of the gifts to humanity I want to achieve the creation of. This is not to say that my designs will be primarily be for Muslim woman as I hope to dress women of all cultures with my elegant garments, bringing to everyone of good taste an opportunity to wear cross cultural art as a global type of expression, a true embrace of multi-cultural style of wearable luxury.
