Mulberry Silk Fabric

One of the most luscious forms of silk that can be found in the country is known as Mulberry silk. This fabric is as old as the Indus Valley Civilization in India. It is extracted from the cocoon of the Mulberry tree silk worm and the quality of the fiber is extremely fine. The color of the fiber is pale or off-white due to the food source of the Mulberry silk worm. Sericulture for Mulberry silk is centered in five states across the country, namely Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir.

While the details about the origin of Mulberry silk are not known entirely, sericulture itself was discovered during the Indus Valley Civilization. These principles were applied once again when the Mulberry silk worm’s commercial value was discovered in the country.
Grey and Maroon Pure Mysore Silk SareeThere are two major characteristics of the Mulberry silk that is found in India – the fabric has an inherent sheen about it and the material appears coarse but is extremely fluid. This silk type is also a lot more commercially relevant in today’s ethnic fashion market. As the original silk fabric itself is white, the textile can be easily dyed. This material also retains dyes much better than most. Mulberry silk was earlier recognized as the fabric of the nobility. Only the higher ups in the society could afford to purchase garments in this fabric. However, as the years have progressed the process of manufacturing has become more and more mechanized, thus cutting the cost of production.

Mulberry silk sarees are among the most popular and most sought after variants of silk sarees in the market. However, this fabric has also been used in the creation of traditional ethnic apparel for men as well as salwar kameez sets for women. Western fashion has used Mulberry silk to create dresses and evening gowns.
