Mary Katrantzou Fall/Winter 2011

8842878269?profile=originalThat's So New YorkEnthralling all with her Fabergé egg reminiscent fall winter collection at London Fashion Week, comprised of highly ornamental garments, Mary Katrantzou went 3D with her silhouettes. Armour-esque silhouettes were encased in prints that resembled intricately glazed Chinese ceramics and sported Swarovski crystal elements. There were her signature lampshade skirts with a twist, sheer trousers, leggings, floaty gypsy skirts, cardigans, bodiced dresses worn over long-sleeved tops and jackets, as well as knitwear – colorful lurex intertwined jacquards.

Her inspirations were “Diana Vreeland’s “a garden in hell” Park Avenue apartment – (abundant flowers layered with print all in crimson), coromandel screens, "prized possessions” and the interwar period. This meant sculptural works of art in a wide variety of unique paradisiacalpatchwork prints, mosaics, dramatic florals, and animal prints on luxe materials such assatinvelvet and chiffon. In rich, jewel shades – azure, ruby, turquoise, violet, vermillion and exquisite detail. Surprisingly, the collection finished with an entirely different angle – floor-length dresses with loose billowing silhouettes that introduced a more feminine and very regal side. When quizzed about the Mary Katrantzou woman, the gifted designer said, “She has a liberated spirit and a strong sense of style.” Contributor -  Menaka Premkumar
