One such route is sales, as sales skills are essential in any industry, even more so since the recession made the market place that little bit more competitive. From accou

J.W. Hulme Co. bags will be carried in more than 30 Barneys New York stores around the country by mid August. But, it was not long ago when Hulme designers Chuck Bidwell and Jennifer Guarino were on the verge of going under. The 105-year-old company was about $2 million dollars in debt during the credit crisis and lost majority of their sales. The Wall Street Journal revealed today how even in this tough economy, this moribund company was able to make a startling comeback.

No Risk? Then, No Sales.

iStock_000010273150XSmall-300x299.jpgTaking a risk in today’s business economic climate is a difficult step but necessary in order to develop and grow your retail or branded company for apparel and footwear.

During Magic in February, Los Angeles fashion industry executives Frances Harder, Dana Fried, David Perry, Robert Greenspan, Staci Riordan and Ernesto Mantilla examined the various aspects of planning, merchandising, branding, sales and international marketing opportunities for a US fashion business.

While leaders of successful companies and brands often have very different working styles and personalities, they do have one thing in common:

They involve themselves in every aspect of their company and/or brand.

At a very successful company I used to work for, which I’ll refer to as Andi James, the owner, Andi, would always go to trade shows with the sales reps. This may have seemed a little annoying to some of the sales reps, but he wasn’t trying to micro-manage or schmooze wit

Stella Ishii was well aware of the disconcerting maze young designers must navigate when she established The News. The muti-label showroom sits in the heart of SoHo, but its web of clients stretches internationally North, East, West and South. A major part of bringing the company into being was when Ishii tapped her talented niece, Aya Morimoto, to be her sales representative.Brandon Graham: You’ve come from a fashion background yourself

A Hybrid Model for Garment Production

The traditional model seems so wasteful: make $20,000 worth of samples which you will distribute to your showrooms, ALL of which cost 3X the standard garment production cost, FEW to NONE of which will ever be sold to recoup any of the money.

In launching Pixyworld, we just couldn't do it. Why not do a real production run right off the bat, with reasonable production costs, and sell direct to the retail customer, at a reasonable retail price?

Well, this approach turned out not to be the whole solut

Wholesale for a "Continuous" Line

When Pixyworld hired our first sales rep at Lace and Denim, Terrie asked me whether our line was "seasonal" or "continuous." It was a surprise (and a comfort) to me that a showroom would have a name for what we do. Rather than making $20,000 worth of samples a season ahead, then taking orders, and then manufacturing the product, we just make each collection once. We sell what we have, both retail and wholesale, and when it's gone, it's gone. Meanwhile, we are always working on new collections, t

Sample Sales- The new way to shop

Sample sales have revolutionized the way we shop. It's now possible to immerse yourself in high fashion by wearing the seasons most coveted looks (by premier designers) while paying only a fraction of the price. There's also a feeling of privilege in knowing you're part of a private, 'members only' shopping club. While access to most elite sample sale sites is limited, it creates excitement when you're chosen to become a member. I believe that anyone seeking membership should be able to find it
