How to source the right fabric

What can apparel labels tell us?

Nothing really.
This label says 97% cotton/ 3% spandex. This is the content of the fibers. This could be for anything from a t-shirt to jeans. Below are 5 other key ingredients not listed on the label to get the fabric you want. This information should be listed on your technical design packet.

Fabric Sourcing Guides for Small Designers

I am a small design company and I can purchase maximum of 100 yards for production. I am thinking about buying a fabric sourcing guide to help me find vendors that will sell to me with low minimums and sample yardage, hoping I can better find what I need. Has anyone used the following guides: "The Small Design Company's Guide to Wholesale Fabrics and Trims" ($50), "The Designers Guide" ($75), "The Sourcer's Guide" ($120), or "By the Yard Resource Guide" ($40 pdf). All have varying price tags and

A Chantilly Web: lovely lace

8842944900?profile=originalWhen I was a little girl an old French nun taught me to lace make, not proficiently but enough to make a pattern. I was probably 11 and I was transfixed on the delicate dance of the wooden bobbins as she demonstrated how to weave her magic black web. There is something dark and gothic about black lace and to see a nun in a rocking chair making this sensual fabric in retrospect is quite strange.

“I consider lace to be one of the prettiest imitations ever made of the fantasy of nature; lace always

The Fabric Files: Textile Structure 101

Image via Flikr/bobbinsandbombshells

Know your fabrics. It’s a point I can’t stress enough. As a designer, understanding the different qualities of textile structures like chiffon and charmeuse, georgette and crepe, organza and gazar (I
could go on…) should be at the top of your list. I’m sure you think you know the difference, but there’s always room for improvement. Designers contact me daily asking for a fabric, and then
look bewildered once supplied because it’s not what they had in mind. This
