BioCouture: Growing Clothing in a Tub


We thought we’ve seen it all with eco-friendly clothes: from recycled plastic bottle suits to solar-powered bags by Diane von Furstenberg, it was only a matter of time before a designer turned to microscopic life forms for inspiration. That’s exactly what Suzanne Lee,a senior research fellow at the School of Fashion & Textiles at Central Saint Martins in London did. Like so many successful designers (Diane von Furstenberg,Steven Alan, etc.) Scott identified a need in the market not through protracted analysis, but going shopping and finding nothing to wear. “I was being asked by lots of clients to, sort of, supplement their wardrobes… It was a moment in fashion where everything was pouffy and frouffy and ruffly and big, and it didn’t’ suit me personally. For the next few months, New York City’s Midtown will have a few new residents on its sidewalk– 32 to be exact. The Fashion Center’s Sidewalk Catwalk opened just yesterday featuring 32 mannequins decorated by some of city’s top fashion designers including Diane von Furstenberg, Betsey Johnson, Badgley Mischka, Thom Browne, Jason Wu, and many more. We took a trip to the heart of the Garment District to visit New York City’s latest public art exhibition, which extends from Herald Square to 42nd St
