J.W. Hulme Co. bags will be carried in more than 30 Barneys New York stores around the country by mid August. But, it was not long ago when Hulme designers Chuck Bidwell and Jennifer Guarino were on the verge of going under. The 105-year-old company was about $2 million dollars in debt during the credit crisis and lost majority of their sales. The Wall Street Journal revealed today how even in this tough economy, this moribund company was able to make a startling comeback.

Like so many successful designers (Diane von Furstenberg,Steven Alan, etc.) Scott identified a need in the market not through protracted analysis, but going shopping and finding nothing to wear. “I was being asked by lots of clients to, sort of, supplement their wardrobes… It was a moment in fashion where everything was pouffy and frouffy and ruffly and big, and it didn’t’ suit me personally. That’s how I started to do my own collection—out of pure frustration.” So, if there’s something missing
