Jacquard is a lightweight translucent fabric with an intricate weave that has a pattern woven into it. The weave of the fabric is very fine and a special loom is used to produce this fabric, much like the ones used to produce Damask or Brocade. Because of the very nature of the fabric, it is considered fashionable and therefore is apt for parties, whether formal or informal. Salwar kameez, sarees and lehenga cholis made from this fabric are considered as some of the most gorgeous Indian ethnic wear attires for women.

The specialty of Jacquard fabrics is that the patterns that are woven into the fabrics make it look richer and more opulent. There are any number of designs that can be woven into it, with a preference for floral patterns and geometric shapes among Indian designers. Furthermore, it is not necessary that the patterns remain in the same color. A vivid mix of hues can be integrated into the fabric, which creates gives the fabric a magical appearance in different kinds of lighting.

Although it was discovered in 1801, the specialized looms didn’t come about until much later. In the 1980s however, a much faster way of producing jacquard fabric was discovered by using electronic looms.

There are three basic types of Jacquard fabrics that can be found in the market. The brocade variety is thicker and coarser, while the Damask variety (which is a kind of brocade) has a sheer quality about it. The third variety is known as Matelasse which is made using rayon, cotton or silk and has a quilted appearance.
