Indian weddings in USA have a mix of American and Indian traditions combined. Even though most Indian traditions are maintained in these weddings, some aspects are still westernized due to the influence of the American culture. Indian weddings in USA are characterized by a large number of attendees. It doesn’t matter if the wedding is in the USA, The whole clan from India will be invited and funny enough almost all invited guests always show up. The Indian traditions are still maintained especially with the dressing, colors and jewelry but they are not as conservative as Indian weddings done in India. Both Indian brides and grooms having their weddings in USA can opt for modern western outfits.

Indian attendees are still expected to wear traditional outfits such as the saris and salwar kameez for women and Punjabi suits and dhoti kurta for men but this is not mandatory as would be if the wedding was conducted in India. However, colors used in the weddings are the same as those used in weddings in India. Indian weddings in USA are also characterized by bright colors. For guests, they don’t have to wear traditional Indian attire but they must choose bright colors of whatever outfits they decide to wear. Don’t be afraid to wear bright colors because they will help you fit in with the Indian guests who will mostly be dressed in traditional outfits with vibrant colors and eye-catching jewelry.

Indian weddings in the USA still follow Indian traditions and therefore the whole ceremony takes place in three days. The first day is the ganesh pooja that happens at home with only the couple, the bridal party and close family and friends. Second day is the mehndi ceremony which is where the bride and the female friends and family have henna drawn on them and the sangeet in the evening where families mingle and eat together and the third day is the main ceremony. Different outfits are worn to these ceremonies. It is however important to note that not everyone is invited to all ceremonies and therefore it is important to know the specific ceremony or ceremonies that you have been invited for so that you chose appropriate outfits. Most guests will be seen wearing cocktail dresses or formal dresses that flatter their body shapes and most men will wear formal suits but most Indian guests will be dressed in their traditional attires.

There is usually misconception about Indian food that they are all spicy and vegetarian. In reality, this is not true. The food you will get in an Indian wedding will depend on the state where the couple’s families are from. In the Indian weddings in the USA the food tends to be North Indian meaning you will see a spread of flatbread with different curries and samosas as well as a dessert display. There is no much difference between Indian weddings in India and in the USA except in the USA; the traditions are not as strict as those in India especially with dressing and food.
