They want to make construction safer with certified safety clothes that not only reflect but also shine themselves. But the yellow jacket movement can also benefit from their innovative jackets according to Philippe Versteeg of Smart2safe.

What is innovative about a reflective jacket?

"Our safety vests not only reflect, but they also fluoresce and phosphorescence. They offer safety on three levels."

"It is a complex physics story about the phenomenon of photoluminescence, but it comes down to the vests radiating the light that they catch during the day, at night."

Like the luminous stars on the ceiling of the nursery?

"Exactly. This makes you much more visible. Even if you are not accidentally illuminated by a construction lamp or the headlight of a car."

Don't all the vests do that for a long time

"Not as good as ours. This really goes one step further and is an innovation in the safety industry. We apply the material not only to vests but also to jackets, pants, helmets."

Also in orange? Because the entire building will have to wear the orange vests from this summer.

"Certainly. They have been tested and certified by the Tüv."

"Safety vests must meet European requirements to guarantee visibility. Such as horizontal stripes and vertical stripes that run across the shoulders and a number of requirements."

You will be left with whole stocks of unsold yellow vests

"There will still be a market for that. In the energy sector, everyone still works with yellow vests sew on reflective tape and the safety people in construction and the railways also remain dressed in yellow. That way they are instantly recognizable.”

I would just take the yellow jackets out the door.

"It is no longer such a large market as it was before. But we are a start-up. My partner and I both have a full-time job and we started Smart2safe next door. We have no Giga stocks.”

Give them away to the angry French citizens

"We do indeed want to do something fun with it to draw attention to our product."

In the Netherlands, it is of course not going well with that yellow vest movement.

"They also need to use phosphorescent vests, not those scraps with a poor reflection strip."

Did you already have yellow jacket leader Jan Dijkgraaf begging at the desk?

"We are still breeding for a promotion. You will see that the Dutch vest movement suddenly gets momentum."
