Pump Fake, also known as a shot fake in basketball, is a shot that is restrained until the feet leave the ground and normally requires a jump shot. The pump fake is a basic basketball trick that is used to get defenders to jump (known as "moving" the defender in basketball slang) or be shifted off-balance. The primary applications are in the low post, where a player's shot is far more likely to be blocked. It's useful on the perimeter for creating open lanes to the basket by "showing" the ball enough to entice a defender to try to block or steal it, allowing the dribbler to easily penetrate.

In basketball, if you haven't already dribbled, you can dribble the ball after a pump fake. If a player has already dribbled the ball and has it in both hands, he or she is not allowed to do so again. The ball will be turned over to the opposing team as a result of this infringement.
