Is it there? Is it not there?

That’s net. Alone, it plays with the imagination, giving a peek of the skin it covers. In layers, it creates a dreamy, wispy effect. And, net is back in trend. Net salwar kameez is particularly ethereal. When done right, a net salwar suit can look elegant and classic.

But, overusing net can make the outfit look loud and tacky. To avoid a chock-a-block of all things gaudy, pick smart use of net in sections or panels, add-on accessories, or in subtlety.

Here’s how to play the net game right!

1. Sleeves – The most popular form of net salwar design is a suit with net sleeves. Longer sleeves look great with some thick embroidery work in the edge, while the sheer fabric shows off the arms.

2. Neckline/Shoulders – If you want to beyond just sleeves, net salwar suit designs with sheer sections above the neckline. If you choose bolder designs, let the net spread to the shoulders! While the solid fabric ends in a tube, sweetheart, keyhole, asymmetry, etc., the net spreads from there to to the throat, or even beyond.

3. Flare/Skirt portion – One of the latest net suit design trends use the diaphanous material below the bust/waist, either as one skirt, or like a jacket, with a slit that forms flaps. There can be a single net layer without any lining, to reveal the waist, or a more voluminous design of multiple layers for a Disney-girl effect! You can also pick skirt designs with alternate panels of net and opaque fabrics.

4. Overall Net Layer – Go for salwar with a single layer of net over the lining for a simple but classy look.

5. Sleeve/Hemline Borders – A subtle way to use net, is to have a translucent border, be it the hemline of the kameez or the cuffs of the long sleeves. They are the reverse of net sleeves, skirt, neckline and shoulder patches.

6. Dupatta – Everyone has a net dupatta. Keep an eye out for one that use panels of net alongside other materials. If the dupatta is wholly made of net, then try to find one with embroidery and design works; one of the trendiest styles is to have one large work of design on the net, instead of patterns spread all over.

7. Cape – Net capes are a rage this season, especially with salwar suits. They immediately set the whole outfit apart!

8. Bottom-Wear – Net panels in the bottom-wear are quite popular. In case of pencil salwar, or fitting pants that end at the ankle, a panel at the end looks great. Net churidar designs are uncommon, but you can have long panels along the sides. As for palazzo, dhoti pants, etc., there can be layers of net.

The trendiest of net salwar kameez designs use a healthy combination of a couple of the above ways, without going overboard. So, don’t be scared to have fun – and you’ll look like you’re wearing a net designer suit at every occasion!
