When it comes to road trips, there are two types of people. There are those who don't mind letting their hair down and sleeping on the backseat if necessary. And then there are those who would like to enjoy a road trip adventure but still look stylish in the process. If you're reading this article, you belong to the second group.

For people like Jack Kerouac, going on a road trip was all about discovering new worlds, meeting people who were passionate about life, and exploring golden lands ahead. An enchanting romantic journey inspired by curiosity, jazz, and beauty. But the sense of style has faded over the years, and what was once an artistic expedition turned into a trudge in baggy T-shirts and flip-flops.

But things have changed yet again. Today we live in the Age of Instagram. Sure, it has plenty of downsides, but the good news is that style is back. Cut-off shorts and parachute pants are no longer acceptable attire for a road trip through Texas. Traveling today is all about the look and feel as much as anything else.

Some may be tempted to dress down for the drive and then dress up for the photo session. However, road trips are inherently unpredictable, so it's better to be prepared. If you have a road trip coming up and are contemplating what to wear to look stylish while also being comfy, this article is for you!

First Consider Your Vehicle

Some vehicles are simply not designed for long-distance travel. You'll be spending many hours in your car, so make sure there's enough room. Even with the best style tips, you won't look good if you are forced to sit in an uncomfortable car for long periods. The importance of comfort cannot be overstated. You need a bit of room to move and unwind.

Also, try to pick a car that gets good gas mileage to cut the cost of your trip.

Finally, get a tune-up. If you are going to drive your car for a long time, it is a good idea to have it checked by a mechanic before you leave. Make sure your oil is changed, your windshield wiper fluid is topped off, and all of your lights are operating properly. Pay close attention to your vehicle's safety features, such as cameras, airbags, antilock brakes, and traction control.

These precautions will help you avoid mechanical problems, getting stranded, and car accidents.

Know Where You're Going and What You Want to Do

What you wear depends on where you're going and what you want to do there. If you're heading to the beach, you'll naturally want to pack clothes that are more "beachy." If you're going to the mountainside, you'll need boots and cardigans.

In general, you need to know your destination and your plans. Remember to factor in stops along the way. If you intend to stop for a hike or a swim in a lake along the way, plan some outfits. Keep a duffel bag or day bag on hand with items you'll need during these stops.

How Long Will You Spend in the Car?

Along with knowing your destination, you should also figure out how long you'll be in the car. Don't forget to take into account the stops we discussed in the previous section.

Regardless of how much sightseeing you do or how many rest stops you visit, you'll want to be well-dressed.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

While you might enjoy wearing high-heels, keep in mind that you'll be sending most of the time in the car, so it's better to opt for shoes that are easy to slip on and off and that you can walk in comfortably when visiting new places.

Flats and sneakers are great for this, and you don't have to worry if they get tossed around in the car. Packing shoes can be difficult because they take up a lot of space and, like clothes, your choice is determined by the weather. However, there are three types that are likely to fulfill all of your travel needs.

The first one is a wedge or stacked heel. You can wear these if you go out to a nice place in the evening and they're much more comfortable than skinny heels.

Then you have fashionable athletic shoes. They're all the rage right now, so you'll be able to roam in style.

Lastly, you have supportive casual shoes. Flats are also a good option, but the support this type provides will feel great when walking for several hours.

Wear Layers

Depending on the season, you may need to wear warmer clothing, but remember to layer. This way, if you feel like it's too hot, you can just take something off, and if it gets too cold, you add a long sleeve or a jacket.

You might want to wear a warm vest as a layer if the weather is very cold on your road trip. Vests are an excellent choice since they provide adequate warmth without being overly bulky. Bring your favorite beanie and scarf to wear whenever you step out of the car.

You could also choose to wear leggings instead of jeans or trousers to stay comfy even if you're stuck in the car for hours. Black is the best option because it hides the occasional stain from road trip munchies. You could get some loose yoga pants as an alternative to tight leggings.

Leggings are ideal for road journeys in the winter, fall, and spring. In summer you can just wear shorts. You'll want to stay away from anything too tight because it can get very uncomfortable.

In terms of summer tops, avoid anything with strange back straps because they hurt when you sit. Packing a couple of tank tops to wear is a good idea no matter where you go. They are ideal for hot weather, and they go with everything.

If it starts to get cold, you'll be glad that you took a sweatshirt with you. Having a "sweat jacket" means you can zip it up and avoid having to deal with trying to pull it over your head. Plus, most sweat jackets also have a hood that will protect your hair if it starts to rain, and if you want to take a little nap, you can pull it over your eyes to keep the light out.
