How to choose a black mens ring

Traditionally most men when they got married they would almost always go for a gold ring or perhaps if that didn’t suit – a platinum ring. And it was almost always of a domed shape. Thankfully mens jewellery has evolved significantly since then, and men now have a vast array of options to choose from.

15 years ago it would have been absolutely unheard of for a man to wear black for his wedding ring. Today however, quite the opposite is true. Black rings allow a man to express their character and personality because not everyone wants a gold or silver coloured ring.

Mens black rings can be worn as is or accented with inlays or stones to further customize. Popular inlays tend to be (overwhelmingly) Silver, and occasionally platinum or even palladium. On occasions Gold and even Rose Gold can be selected because of the stark contrast that is offered with these inlays. However an inlay that small doesn’t really offer much intrinsic value unfortunately.  Stones such as black diamonds, black spinels or white diamonds are the most popular rings to use. CZ stones often get used on cheaper products.

So then, what type of material to purchase if you’re after a man on the lookout for black ring? Here we compare materials to give you an insight into Black products.

Black Tungsten – this is just powdercoated tungsten which is ok as a fashion ring but it doesn’t make much sense for a wedding ring.

Black Ceramic – Black ceramic is a good option if you want a light and inexpensive ring. Again, great for a fashion ring but most people want something a bit more up market for their wedding ring

Black Titanium – this is an incredible product developed by Edward Mirell. The product is grey titanium which has the surface changed at the molecular level by extreme heat and pressure. The result is a crust like surface which is impervious to scratches. Black Titanium is extremely difficult to damage.

PVD coatings are also an option however these really haven’t been tried and tested and although there is quite a bit of hype over them, we really don’t understand the wear patterns. Traditionally PVD coatings performed poorly over time and would eventually chip and scratch which is a very poor option for a wedding ring.

Powdercoatings – These perform even worse than PVD coatings and we don’t recommend them. The black will scratch off very quickly indeed.

So there are a few ideas to get you started on your journey to finding a black ring. If you are a man, it’s a great time to be on the lookout for one!!
