In a move that both empowers women and instils environment friendly habits, an all various self-help groups (SHGs) in Navi Mumbai distributed over 550 eco-friendly bags made out of old sarees at Vashi on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on Wednesday.
The aim is to replace plastic with biodegradable and sustainable material. This was an opportunity to reduce use of plastic bags and generate income through it. Lot of women who have to stay back home but they want to do something to support their families.
The illegal use of plastic bags must be completely stopped. That is why the citizen are coming up better ideas to recycle clothes, sarees to make eco-friendly bags.
The bags made of saree materials like nylon, cotton, chiffon, silk etc were immediately taken by local shopkeepers at rate of 8 rs per bag. He added that since the local shopkeepers have asked for more such bags from the self-help groups, the ladies are now planning to create over 5,000 such bags.
It is beneficial for both the women in self-help group as well as the dealers.
