"Fashion films were around in the 70s, but they have taken a new form and at the moment are experiencing a virtual exposition," Diane Pernet told Portable yesterday. Sounds a bit exciting, doesn't it? Well, I think so anyway. And, if you fancy a trip to Paris ...

The ASVOF (A Shaded View of Fashion) Film festival will take place at the Pompidou centre in Paris next week on the 7th-9th of October, and close Paris Fashion Week. The Festival, which has taken place annually for the last 3 years, forms an exhibition of feature films, documentaries, installations and performances, all within this rather marvellous genre. If, like me, you are a bit of a neophyte where fashion film is concerned, and are not quite sure how it all fits in with the catwalk, the differences between Fashion Film itself and the promotional short films produced by fashion brands are explored a little bit in this article on Portable, so you might like to have a read. Also, do make a wee trip to the ASVOFF site, where more is explained, and you can get a glimpse of the kinds of films that will be on offer.
The Portable article also shares some words from Diane Pernet, the founder of the event and ex-film costume designer (among other fabulous things.) In the interview Diane reveals the first fashion film she ever saw - 'Who are you, Polly Magoo?' and her favourite fashion film - 'The Bitter Tears of Petra Kant'. You can see clips of both below, and they're certainly worth a watch, if only for the inspiration factor. Enjoy! (and stop giggling at the bad 70s visuals...)
