Formal Shirts Fabric Types

Formal Shirts can be made of many different materials each with their pros and cons. Let us look at each:

Cotton

Linen

Linen is woven from the fibers of the flax plant. It is very absorbent and shirts made of linen can be exceptionally cool and fresh even in hot tropical weather. Linen textiles seem to have been woven in many old civilisations; fabrics dated 36,000 years ago have been excavated. Egyptian mummies used to be wrapped in linen as a sign of prestige.

Linen is a now a popular and premium textile. Some of the products made from linen are napkins, bed linens, tablecloths, runners, chair covers etc.

Cotton Blend

Cotton can be blended with other fibres such as linen. Linen-cotton blends will give you the advantage of both fabrics. These fabrics are textured, breathable and  wrinkle resistant. They are stronger than cotton but still light enough to be comfortable and keep you cool.

Polyester

This is a fabric woven from polyester thread. Polyester includes both natural plant based and synthetic polymer groups. These are coloured using dyes called disperse dyes. They are stain resistant, durable and affordable.

Polyester material is used as cushioning material in pillows and upholstery, in human apparel, home and bed furnishings. They are also used as fabrics for conveyor belts, safety belts etc.

Polyester Blend

Polyester fibers are spun together with natural fibers such as cotton to produce a cloth with blended properties. This blend also known as polycotton is quite strong, doesn’t wrinkle or shrink so much. Compared to the original cotton fabric, however it is not so breathable and can stick to the skin when you perspire.

Which material to choose

When woven into shirts with the best formal shirt design, each of these fabrics will bring their own characteristics, depending on the thread count and weaving style.

Some of the shirts will be more affordable, while others will last for years. Some will wrinkle easily and will need a lot of ironing, while others will be less breathable. If you are working around food for example, you could opt for polyester shirts. Other things such as texture, patterns and designs also are a consideration.

Choose the material and best formal shirt design for your body type. When you are building a wardrobe, putting some thought into it ensures you have something for every occasion and one that will be evergreen.
