Five Things to Look For in a Hair Stylist

hair-stylist-midtown-manhattan.jpgDon’t trust your luscious locks to just anyone! When you put your hair in someone else’s hands, you want to make sure that they are the right hands. How do you know if you are getting the best hair care? Read on to determine five things that you should be looking for when choosing that special hair stylist.

1. Pre-Assessment

A pre-assessment is so important when you sit in a new stylist’s hair chair. They should look you over to determine what kind of hair you have - thick, thin, wavy, straight, etc. They should also be able to tell you which kinds of cuts will look good with your facial shape and which ones to avoid. They will also check out your coloring and be able to spout off about a dozen hair color shades and highlight or low light colors that will complement your warm or cool skin tone. If you are meeting a stylist for the first time and they just begin to cut away, it may be time to reconsider who is doing your  ‘do.

2. Professionalism

Let’s be honest - no one wants a stylist who looks like they can’t do their own hair, to do their hair! The beauty business is all about appearances and first impressions. If they aren’t able to wow you at hello, you should look for someone else who can.

3. Educated

A great stylist is “educated” on the current cut trends and colors. They speak to you using a variety of hair industry terms and better yet; break these terms down for you so that you understand what they are talking about. Ask your stylist if they’ve attended any trade shows or have taken any kind of beauty classes recently. Or, better yet; ask them who inspires their own personal style to determine if that professional will be a good fit with your own personal preferences.

4. Helpful

A great stylist takes the time to show you how to maintain your new hair style. They may go over how to apply certain products (and the order in which to apply them in), which heated styling tools to use and how, and will even recommend specific shampoos or conditioners that will enhance your hair type or color treatment.

5. Accommodating

While it is great for stylists to make their own suggestions, you are ultimately the one who has to be happy with your hair cut or color. It’s important to bring in photographs of the style or color you want if you have a difficult time explaining yourself. This way, a clear picture can be painted and your stylist will be able to give you the closest match possible. If they aren’t enthusiastic when it comes to giving you a certain look, you won’t be excited about obtaining their services and will also be less happy with the overall outcome. Look for a stylist who is very open and accommodating.

Consider these five traits when choosing a hairdresser . This way, you will ensure you get the exact look that you desire and the best hair care around!
