Fashion Jobs Career Advice

Applying for fashion jobs can be an arduous task. CVs take a long time to get right, but perhaps more important to your chances of getting an interview is your covering letter. Covering letters are the first thing a prospective employer will read, and with them you get the opportunity to describe in more detail why you're perfect for the job, and elaborate on your strengths more so than in your CV. So, how should covering letters look? RetailChoice.com offers a guide to writing them...

First of all, make sure you do your research. Look up the company's history, but also investigate areas of growth in the company and tailor your application to state that you can contribute to that growth. Remember that in any business, whether you're in a creative or a commercial capacity, the aim of the business is to make money. With this in mind you have to make reference to your previous contributions, and not just rely on how passionate you are about fashion.

Keep the first paragraph very concise: state what position you're applying for and why you should be considered for the role. Explain how you were made aware of the position, because in the case of a mutual contact this could prove important, however don't get bogged down in the detail. State why the role interests you and be specific, don't use any broad statements here.

In the second paragraph you need to include details on why you are right for the job, but retain a focus. Illustrate two or three points that set out why you should be considered and back them up with evidence of your experience. Use specific examples of achievements, but make sure these relate tot he position you're applying for and show why your experience is valid for the job. Ensure that you keep referring specifically to the job and the company, so that they know that is this job in particular that you want.

In the final paragraph you need to wrap things up concisely. Refer to your enclosed CV, ask to be considered for an interview and say when you're available.

Finally make sure you've spelled everything correctly and go ever every detail with a tooth comb. If you're applying for several jobs it's wise to alter your covering letter, because there is nothing worse than making reference to the wrong company in a covering letter!

PLEASE keep all discussions relevant to fashion, textiles, beauty products, or jewelry.
