Do’s and Don’ts for Women in the World of Fashion.

I have been admiring women for decades now who know how to dress. Many women don’t know how to dress themselves and, okay, I guess we can all excuse them. Better to help them though. In any case, if you have read my blogs, you know they all center on women and how they can have a marvelous wardrobe consisting of the very top-of-the-line designer pieces. It is true that some women have a flair for making themselves look good but for most of the women I have admired over the years, starting with the two Aunts who watched over me, and the hundreds of women I have known over the years-well, most of them need the top designers to assist them in looking fab! For me, there are do’s and don’ts. Here are my favorites.

Do: Wear what you love to wear! It makes a huge difference if you like, really like, even adore a piece of clothing you are going to wear. Women, I think, know instinctively how they look in a dress or blouse or coat. This is why they have to try on nine or ten outfits before they walk out the door. Most men don’t have this instinct except moi and the Donald

Don’t: Wear anything at all that doesn’t fit you. This is one of my commandments to women. Now please be aware that a perfectly good dress can be a GREAT dress if you simply take it to your local tailor, and have him or her do their thing! I have always said every woman must trust her tailor. Even if the dress is off the rack (I so don’t like off the rack, but whatever) it can look better if you tuck here, shorten there, and let out a little. Spend a few dollars and make it fit! Especially if the clothing is a designer piece!

Do: Build yourself a designer based wardrobe! Now, ladies, listen closely because this is gospel! And when I use an exclamation mark I am exclaiming! You can build a designer based wardrobe over time. If you have married an NBA basketball star go ahead and purchase that wardrobe now. But, for most of the women I meet every day they have to sort of work on building the wardrobe. Treat yourself to three or four designer pieces a year at the very least. In five years you will thank yourself that you started doing that. And, I know you will begin to lean towards one particular designer. Versace, Armani, Pucci, St. John, Celine, and on and on. When I do lunch with three women I know who are wearing the top designers, their clothing is easy to spot. Quality, uniqueness, and style are flowing to my eyes! For bargains try www.wardrobetrailer.com -my favorite site! I know they have a Facebook presence so sign up for their news. They often show a new piece or two every week!

Don’t: Settle for the mass merchandisers! Of course you are going to have to deal with the mass merchandisers. I have heard ad nauseam of the offerings of Macy’s, Ross, Nordstroms, and Bloomingdales, however, what they offer is in style for a year, in a good year, and sometimes even months go by and you wouldn’t be caught out on the street in that dress. Those pieces wind up at the local Salvation Army, or in the Goodwill bins, not that those fine institutions don’t appreciate your charity. Buy a Escada pair of slacks and they will be in your closet for years on end because of their wonderful style and flow around your legs. Buy on sale at Macy’s if you must, but your lust should be for that designer label!

Do: Visit the designer retail stores! If you start out with a plan to build your wardrobe with truly beautiful designer label clothes, and remember I am not talking about the low end of the so-called designers, but the real designers—then remember that some of the pieces you will buy become almost heirloom items for your grandaughters! Also, in the beginning, while you should visit the retail stores to get the essence of the designer pieces, you can start out with the vintage pieces. Google "designer clothing, vintage, couture clothing", and so on. As noted above the wardrobetrailer is my favorite web site but there are many out there.

I would love to hear from those women who know and love real fashion! A woman smartly dressed shopping on Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles can almost stop traffic! Write me.
