This is a interesting story so pull up a chair and pour yourself a nice drink.  Earlier in the week I had stopped by one of my favorite thrift stores and hanging on the wall was this vintage 70′s Bill Blass ball gown.   The reason I passed on it was because of the price tag of $75.  I seriously considering buying it but I had a hard time justifying the price tag.  A few days pass and I just decide that I was ready to buy that Bill Blass gown so I drive back only to find out that they had sold the piece.  I know, I should have bought that damn gown right on the spot but my hesitation made me, in the end, lose a very treasured item. So since I was there again I started to shop and instantly found this vintage 60′s Donald Brooks silk & velvet dress with pockets.  I’m a huge fan of Donald Brooks, he was a stage and screen dress designer.  He did not become as famous as Claire McCardell, Bonnie Cashin, Bill Blass and Geoffrey Beene, but within the industry, Bill Blass, Geoffrey Beene and Donald Brooks were knows as “the three B’s of fashion.”  Donald Brooks’s passion, however, and the majority of his career, belonged to stage design.  He designed for Julie Andrews, Diahann Carroll, Liza Minnelli, Carol Burnett & Lee Remick.  He received a Tony nomination for “No Strings” and the first of three Oscar nominations, for “The Cardinal,” in 1963, the same year he won his first Coty Award for his fashion design.  His pieces are very collectible so I was thrilled to have found this Donald Broooks but disappointed in myself for not buying that damn Bill Blass when I had the chance.  From here on out, I promise, I won’t let a steep price tag get the best of me.  Sometimes you just have to jump into the pool and swim and not just stick your toe in !!  I’m Daniel Troppy your vintage luxury curator!
