Fashion is something that you deal with on a daily basis. The fact is that the root of this fabulous relationship between fashion and dance lay in the Renaissance period.

The Renaissance period - fashion and dancing   

Many things were going on during the revival of European art and literature. At that time, it began to matter what you wore. To be more precise, you couldn’t walk around dressed however you liked. There were laws prohibiting who was permitted to wear what, not to mention the cost of the materials. People changed their attitudes towards clothes and appearance.

Men and women of the Renaissance period wanted to be slim and delicate. New materials transformed tailoring and cutting and sewing were brought to another level. As you can imagine, Renaissance fashion mirrored the advancing culture. Robes were elaborate and bright. As far as men were concerned, they looked like they were legendary characters.

What about dancing? Well, dancing was enjoyed by those at high levels. It wasn’t solely for entertainment. Dance was a social expectation. Royal courts were constantly struggling to demonstrate their worth and anyone who wanted to be taken seriously had to know how to dance. Dance represented a channel for communication. Not only did you have to know how to dance, but also have the right attire. Now, do you begin to understand the connection between fashion and dance? You can’t have one without the other. Once the ball culture emerged, individuals were able to live the best of their lives. From the dawn of time, fashion and dancing have made the perfect partners, having a significant impact on one another.

The impact of film on fashion  

There isn’t a single person in the world who doesn’t like to watch old Hollywood movies. After reading Craig's latest book, they turn on the computer and see movies featuring Audrey Hepburn or Fred Astaire. Audrey Hepburn wasn’t exactly a dancer, but if you take a close look at her films, you’re most likely to see her moving rhythmically. When it comes down to Fred Astaire, he was a great dancer. This is evident in the movie Not Such a Fine Romance. Screen dancing was very popular in the past and became part of the lifestyle.

Fred Astaire, in particular, was a muse for fashion designers of the time. Thanks to people like him, the dance culture became reflected in the fashion scene. But what about now? In modern times, dance continues to influence fashion. If you’ve had the time to check out the latest collections, you’ve no doubt seen that many pieces of clothing resemble those worn by actors in sci-fi movies. It’s impossible to miss such a detail.

Many films have had a vivid impact on fashion. Avatar is just one of them. Another example worth mentioning is Coco before Channel. It can be argued that the fashion world loves this relationship. It’s harder and harder to come up with new designs and those who are responsible for designing high-fashion clothing seek inspiration wherever they can. Just as you find real fashion in films, you find influences from movies in fashion. If you were to ask the professionals of the industry, they would certainly deny that there is a link between fashion and dance.

The biggest thrills will be felt by the dancers

It’s only normal to want to know who benefits the most from the relationship between fashion and dance. We’re tempted to say that, at the present moment, dancers are at an advantage. Fashion designers are competing against each other to create apparel for fields belonging to dance.

It’s true that designing costumes isn’t the same thing as designing clothes, but they manage to do it. Alexander McQueen is capable of putting together different elements of work and so are other fashion designers. There are many challenges for those who attempt to get into the dance world. A costume isn’t meant to draw attention. Well, it is but it has to be practical. Certain materials or sewing restrict the movement of the body, which is a big no-no.

Dancers are certainly the ones to feel the biggest thrills. They will have their bodies wrapped in fine clothing. After having performed on stage, many understand that fashion and dance are the ideal fit. How long it will take others to grasp this simple concept there is no way of knowing. We just hope that it won’t be long until this happens.
