8844038652?profile=originalStyle is a word we hear often. The simplest way to describe style is “self-expression,” a way to reflect what is on the inside of each person. In a world of mass-produced clothing and accessories, sewing enables you to express your own style. Here are four ways to add style to your creations.

Appliques

An applique is a piece of fabric with ornamental needlework that is attached to a larger piece of fabric to create a picture or pattern. The ornamental piece could be in a contrasting color to stand out or be made of the same material used in the project for a textured look. The applique should be stabilized with pins or Heat Bond (a web-like material that is cut to the size of the applique and fused between it and the larger piece of fabric) before it is stitched in place by hand or with a sewing machine.

Embroidering

This centuries-old, world-wide form of needlework adorns garments, handkerchiefs, slippers, flags, uniforms, bags, and much more. The needlework often consisted of floral or geometric patterns. This delicate work was done by hand until the early nineteenth century, when the first embroidery machine was invented in France. Today, the majority of embroidery is done by computerized embroidery machines. Many embroidery machines have been made for in-home use.

Stitching

A topstitch in contrasting thread can add a subtle pop to a garment. It can be a simple straight stitch or something fancier. Most modern sewing machines come with various decorative stitches. If you’re a beginner, it is best to practice on scraps of the fabric you are using for your creation. Try out different widths, stitch lengths and even different kinds of thread until you discover what you like.

Paint

Fabric paint is an excellent way to embellish fabric. It comes in different forms, the cheapest being acrylic. Mix in textile medium to make the acrylic paint soft and flexible. A design can be hand-painted freestyle or applied with a rubber art stamp. Stencils can also be used, especially if you want a uniform embellishment across multiple projects.

These four ideas should help get you started and inspire you. There are so many more techniques to discover. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. Not sure what your style is? Experiment with these and other ideas until you find your style.
