Compulsory Reflective Elements for Pedestrians

The amendment will probably be effective in the spring, says Transport Minister Dan in launching a campaign to increase pedestrian safety. Reflective tapes will also be handed out by the police. She promises that even after the introduction of the new duty, people will talk rather than fined them.

Pedestrians probably will not have the obligation to wear reflective elements on the roads for reduced visibility as early as January 2016, as proposed by the Ministry of Transport. "It could start paying in spring," said Minister Dan. The amendment to the Road Traffic Act, which contains this news item, is waiting for a third reading in the Chamber of Deputies, then it will still be dealt with by the Senate and signed by the President.

The ministry, or its BESIP organization, today launched a campaign to increase pedestrian safety on dark roads and reduced visibility. There are TV clips with actor, in which pedestrians work to use reflective vest.

"By the end of next year we will give them half a million in schools and other places," said Martin, head of BESIP. About thirty million crowns from the Damage Fund are earmarked for the campaign.

About one hundred deaths on Czech roads, according to the Ministry, are attributable to pedestrians and cyclists who without wear safety vest and have not been seen.
