Clubmaster Sunglasses – Look the Part

Clubmaster, or Browline sunglasses, have been a huge sensation for many years. They were first created in 1947 by Jack Rohrbach and Shuron Ltd. Sold them under the Ronsir brand. They quickly became extremely popular and many other manufacturers began to release their own versions of the Browline style to keep up with the trends. The name, browline, derives from the fact that they are similar in style to the way a person’s eyebrow lies on their face. Today they are better known as Clubmaster sunglasses because of their resurrection by Ray-Ban.

The 1950s and 1960s saw this style really explode into the world of eyewear, taking the limelight away from the infamous aviator silhouette. At this time at least half of the sunglasses being sold were the Browline style and Shuron alone sold over 16 million pairs throughout the 50s and 60s.

Companies were offering their own unique alterations to the style and some opted to use aluminium tops instead of the original plastic to accompany the metal frames.

Browline sunglasses became a must have for everyone who was anyone. Famous figures such as Malcolm X always wore this style as well as the renowned James Dean and many more. However, just like the aviators that came before them, the clubmaster style was surpassed by a new style as the 1970s started off the hippie generation. A big part of this was a break from conformity which, unfortunately, the Browline eyewear range was beginning to fall under due to its popularity.

This comeback was sparked by Ray-Ban who, in 1986, brought this style back to life with new and improved models of their own which they called the Wayfarer Max and Clubmaster collection. They invented these new models as a response to the style becoming popular once more after Bruce Willis donned a pair of Shuron Ronsirs in the TV series Moonlighting.

Today, Clubmaster sunglasses remain a very popular style and have featured a lot in the world of television, making appearances in Mad Men, Heroes and American Horror Story in the last 5 years.

They are bang in fashion for the upcoming spring and summer seasons and have been popular with the likes of David Beckham, Beyoncé and Kristen Stewart.
