Challenges Within the Fashion Industry

Beauty and prestige are adjectives synonymous with the fashion industry and likewise with models themselves.  Meticulous to the point of perfection, models are under constant scrutiny to maintain their sought after aesthetic. Being born good looking only gets you half the way there, models are constantly on the lookout to insure they are keeping their physique up to industry standards.  With the industry demanding models to be thinner and thinner, the words beauty and prestige can at times fade away.  This is where we begin to see the other side of the curtain, the life of a model isn't always glamorous.8843106482?profile=original

Models have always been skinny.  This is nothing new, but in recent years models seem to be getting even thinner.  This standard that the industry has become renowned for has lead to two main issues.  The first issue is a nutritional one.

The majority of models, who are pressurized to stay thin in order to book jobs, manage to lose weight and stay thin in a healthy way.  They exercise frequently and monitor their nutritional intake to insure they aren't putting their body at risk.  This, however, is far easier said than done. As models are put under increasing amounts of stress and as competition increases some models look for other ways of dropping pounds.  They eat tiny meals, or skip meals all together.  At first these tactics seem innocent enough, but any veteran of the industry can tell you what a slippery slope this can become.  For some it's just skipping breakfast, but for others it could lead to anorexia or bulimia two very serious eating disorders that aren't a stranger to the fashion world.

Another issue within the fashion world, and more specifically within modeling circles, is drug abuse.  For decades drugs such as cocaine have been linked to everyone from industry photographers to internationally recognizable supermodels.  Cocaine gained popularity in the 80's not only for it's party atmosphere effect but also because it kept people's appetites down.  In the modeling world, where parties are many and waists thin, drugs like cocaine spread like wildfire.  While cocaine isn't as popular as it may have been years ago, there is no doubt that it is still easily available and not the only detrimental substance floating around the industry.  Because drugs are so readily available, and models are under such a constant level of stress, addiction within the industry isn't unheard of.  In fact, it is something that many models deal with from time to time.  But models aren't without help, many are put in place to help those in need, and there is always more information available.
