Bringing out aesthetics of street play

Shedding light on the rich lore-based aesthetic of street plays, the third edition of the Theruvarangu-2017, the street festival organised in memory of Bharat award winning actor and theatre personality P J Antony, will begin on March 1 in Kochi. Showcasing different style of narratives, stories and ideas, the festival will offer theatre aficionados some stunning performances in the form of new vibrant plays.

Around 12 plays and 48 presentations will be held at four venues. These plays handpicked by an expert committee including theatre personalities are expected to present spectators with a new experience.

The plays will be staged in the courtyard of Ernakulam Public Library, premise of Panangad Mahaganapthi Temple, Jawahar Arts Club and Library in North Paravur and Thrikkaraiyur Mahadeva Temple premises in association with Public Library, Ernakaulam, Shruthi Panangad, Jawhar Arts Club, Thathappilly, Bhodhi Kothamanglam and P Krishnapillai Memorial Library, Thrikkariyur.

Three plays will be presented at each venue daily from 5.30 pm. A total of 48 performances will be staged and each venue will get to host all the plays, said the organisers.

The festival is being organised with an aim to popularise the aesthetics of street plays and its doctrine. The festival is also an attempt to explore or go beyond the established moulds of the street play presentation by embracing new techniques and style, said the organisers.

Seminars, gatherings of theatre personalities and workshops will also be conducted in connection with the Theruvarangu.
