ASK I'M SO HOLLYWOOD: The Art of Gift Giving

holiday-gift.jpg

Well, it's that time of year again!

Still haven't figured out what to give that special someone?  Here are a few tips that may help make the process a little more smooth and appreciated (ahem, USED) by the recipient:

1. Give a gift that is from the heart.  Or, at least one that was thought out.  DO NOT give a gift because (a) that's what YOU wanted them to have or (b) they are "lucky" to even receive a gift from you.  Those are never good reasons to give a gift.  Why?

(a) the gift is "supposed" to be for the recipient, and (b) chances are the recipient can usually tell the meaning behind the gift and would much rather not receive anything at all IF the gift didn't come from the right place (your heart or the "thought that counts").

So an electric chair with a plug in foot spa massage or dirty house slippers with lint balls and pet hair growing out of it are not going to make the cut.

2. Re-giftingNOT recommended UNLESS (a) the recipient doesn't know the original giver of the gift you received and (b) you know that the person would appreciate -- ahem, USE -- the gift more than you would.

3.  Special note to the MEN:  Most women DO NOT WANT anti-aging cream, exercising equipment OR gym passes...no matter how much she may complain about aging or being overweignt.  Most women are sensitive, and although you are being attentive, she is hoping you wouldn't notice the areas she is complaing about (EVEN IF SHE TALKS ABOUT AT EVERY MINUTE OF THE DAY).  Just note, if you decide to go this route, her weight gain/aging issues will be the least of your problems.  You've been warned :)

Things I recommend:

1.  Gift cards and gift certificates (you usually can't go wrong with either, unless of course it's a gift card or certificate for anything mentioned in Note #3).

2.  Fragrances (you should TRY to find out what the person wears).

3. Baskets (filled with their favorite things, or special things like wine and cheese, bath and body items -- if that's what they're into).

What are some other good/bad gifts to give?  Let's hear them!
