Do you shop at H&M, or snub high-priced designer labels in Montenapoleone in favour of outlet finds? Congratulations, you're a recessionista - a woman with 'a keen eye for style but an even sharper eye for a bargain'.
Apparently, more and more of us fashionistas are seeking out low-price clothes that give the style but won't give our wallet a diet, and over one third of us own an item of clothing that cost less than 5€.
The bargain fashion boom was boosted by e-bay, fast fashion and those huge outlets starting to pop out in every corner of our streets (see Touch&Go). While going shopping to flee markets was once considered to0 hippy for classy girls, nowdays we have started considering "vintage" or "self-made" soooo CHIC.
Once while I was shopping at Convivio in Milan, a russian lady (I know she was russian from the accent and from the over-branded clothes she had...anyway) a russian lady stopped me to ask what designer was I wearing. I answered proudly 'skirt H&M on sale for €5' and 'shirtStradivarius on sale for €1.95' The lady was incedulous and was pulling my skirt toward her friend talking loudly in russian, which I don't understand. Telling from the face, she was repeating what I just told her.
What's the lesson here.
Let me repeat the concept. I answered proudly that I was wearing a €6,95 outfit. Because nowadays we are proud to show that we can have style within every economic income. When I'm asked about my bags, that's where I start to feel uncomfortable. Spending thousands on designed leather bags, that's what makes me start feeling a bit ashamed. (just a bit...then I turn to my love for shoes&bags forgetting recession)
