Are Teeth the Forgotten Fashion Accessory?

We live in an age where beauty can be examined under a microscope and any number of tiny faults in our bodies can be dramatised. From our hair cuticles to skin pores, we have invented thousand-dollar fixes for the tiniest of problems. Yet while we’re fixing our eyebrows and shrinking our pores, we often forget one of the most basic beauty items - teeth. You would be amazed at the number of people who remember to moisture every day but see flossing and mouthwash as ‘optional’ or something that it is okay to forget. When models walk down a runway, many marvel at their beautiful faces and impossible figures and try to emulate them, yet few focus on emulating their pearly whites. Why is it that looking after your teeth has gone out of fashion, and what moves should we take to get our smiles beaming again?

So why are teeth the forgotten fashion accessory?

We have become so used to micromanaging every part of our appearance that the basic things our mothers teach us like brushing after every meal fall by the wayside. Keeping your teeth perfectly white was once one of our biggest fashion and beauty to-dos, but nowadays we have been distracted by headaches everyday about things like shaping our eyebrows. That’s not saying that things like skincare aren’t important, but I guarantee somebody is going to notice a beautiful smile of white teeth much quicker than they will notice your small pores. Going the extra length to keep your teeth white is important now because they enhance your beauty, but they are also important for later on. You’ll have your teeth for a long time, so you should really take extra care of them.

But I brush my teeth everyday?!

I’m not denying that almost all people brush their teeth everyday, but who can claim to floss and mouthwash their teeth everyday as well or take them for a checkup and professional cleaning every 6 months? I’m guessing the number is a lot smaller.

Good dental hygiene is more than brushing your teeth, but not much more. Keeping your teeth white and bright does not take expensive creams or spa treatments, it just takes some floss, a good toothbrush, some good whitening toothpaste and mouthwash. It is not expensive and you get great returns. For those interesting in modeling, teeth are even more important because flash will often highlight the smallest of imperfections with your teeth, Although some opt for veneers, if you have straight teeth there is no reason why the basics can’t get your teeth back to white and bright after a few months of love and care.

What are some good tips to follow to get a model’s white teeth?

  • You are what you eat (and drink): stay away from coffee, red wines and sodas. They are bad for the enamel of your teeth and also are the worst offenders for staining your teeth - coffee might be your guilty pleasure but you are never getting to get a blindingly white smile by drinking 5 cups a day.
  • Flossing is not optional. The spaces in between your teeth often host plenty of nasty items that you really want to clean out. Floss your teeth daily and make sure that you wash out every time with mouthwash.
  • Buy a new toothbrush. Too many people continue to use an old toothbrush long after it has run down. Even if your toothbrush looks okay, it’s probably lost a lot of the firmness that helps it clean your teeth properly. Do yourself a favour and buy a new one every 3-6 months.
  • Don’t smoke. Smoking is the quickest way to ruin white teeth, and of course it is bad for your health in a million other ways. Don’t do it.
