Airdye on the Cover of Vogue

In the October 2010 edition of Vogue, they point the spotlight on textile water use and pollution. To learn more about the impact of textiles on water, the magazine spoke to our friends Jeffery Costello and Robert Taliapietra.

While the ethical implications of fashion are sometimes overlooked for the sake of style, Costello Tagliapietra are at the forefront educating themselves and others in the industry about sustainability. In the article, Jeffery explains that “It can take 45 gallons of water to dye the fabric for just one garment.” But water use is not the half of it. Robert added that “even if you use sustainable textile, the dyeing process is toxic.”

Given these facts, the pair began looking for eco-friendly textile dyes and began working with AirDye® technology. As regular readers here know, for the past three seasons Costello Tagliapietra has made use of our technology to create their sophisticated, sexy dresses.

In the Vogue photo, the dress worn by actress Zoe Kazan (and photographed by Arthur Elgort) takes advantage of AirDye’s ability to dye each side of the fabric a different color or design. Designs by Costello Tagliapietra make the most of this unique ability and use it in both obvious and subtile ways. Robert points out that “The underside is a sage-y green, making this red shimmer in the light.”
