Aging with Style

It has always been a fashion law that style has an age limit.  We fall from fashion frenzy into the comfortable mauve cardigans of old age with merely a whimper.

Is that the way it should really be or can we allow ourselves more freedom and individuality?

Your personal style and clothing choices can be an expression of your personality, tastes and preferences. Someone with style is aware of what type of clothing looks good on their body shape and what colours most complement their skin and hair.

Is this something that stops at 50 or 60 or 70 years of age? No, of course it doesn’t.

Just because the clothing you wore a decade or three ago still fits you doesn’t mean you should still be wearing it.  It might be ok to use a key piece or two if the fashion has returned, but don’t go overboard.  And remember that your colouring and personality have probably changed during that time also, so it’s highly unlikely your old wardrobe suits your style anyway!

The simplest style rule is always to have a wardrobe of timeless, ageless classic pieces that stand the test of time as well as wear and tear.

Add to this some current, on trend and if you dare, funky items, regardless of your age, that you feel suit your personal style. The important question is always whether you feel good in whatever you are wearing.  If it’s a yes then go for it. As you get older it’s ok to incorporate the latest fashions and fads into your wardrobe, just be careful not to go overboard. Less is probably best, and simple is better!

Take a look at this video of women whose love of fashion and style has never faded and see the fun and joy they are having with it.  They have not allowed themselves to be limited by anything other than their own choice and taste.

Rules that never go out of style:

•Wear clothes that fit! Too large or too small are unflattering no matter your size.
•Buy the best quality footwear you can afford and take care of them.  Scuffs and dirt are never stylish.
•Take care of your skin and your general health.  There is little more stylish than healthy glowing skin and hair, despite your age.
•Show off your signature pieces and personality.  Do you have a collection of vintage handbags or cufflinks?  Don’t leave them in a drawer, wear them and share them.
•Smelling good is ageless.  The newest scent from the latest ‘celebrity’ probably doesn’t work once you hit a ‘certain age’ but only you can decide when that is.
•Smile and be comfortable in your own skin.

Style doesn’t have an age limit, nor does it have a gender divide and Coco Chanel, the doyenne of style summed it up best when she said

“Fashion changes, but style endures.”
