Planning to attend a party but have nothing to wear? Are saris and lehengas just too cumbersome? Consider wearing a party wear salwar kameez! Easy to wear, easy to manoeuvre and fun to accessorize, the salwar kameez is one of the most popular types of Indian attire.

Every party wear type of salwar begins with the basic salwar shape which is a long kurta that ends just at the knees with churidars or salwars underneath.

If you’re confused about which type of salwar kameez to wear to your friend’s party, consider the following popular styles:

1.  Patiala Salwar:

This style of salwar originated from the city of Patiala in Punjab. There, this dress is regarded as royal attire. Sometimes patialas are referred to as Patialia Shahi salwar because this attire was once worn by members of the royal family.

In a Patiala salwar, the pleats begin at the waist and continue their folding pattern towards the back of the legs. This adds volume to the lower portion of the suit. The kurta portion is heavily laden with embroidery and stonework. Its length ends just below the waist line. The Patiala salwar is finished off with a dupatta in a complementary color.

2.  Dhoti Salwar:

This salwar style takes its inspiration from the male dhoti. Its lower portion is similar to a Patiala wherein the pleats start in the front and wrap around the leg. However, their unique stitching pattern gives them a u-shaped look in the sides. The cuffs are also slanted. The kurta is loose and very comfortable to wear. Depending on the material, the Dhoti salwar truly is a suit for all seasons.

3.  Afghani Salwar:

This salwar gets its name from Afghanistan. It has wide cuffs on the bottom and is narrow than a typical salwar. Its lower portion contains several pleats which are a cross between a Patiala and a dhoti salwar. The kurta is long but ends just at the knees. Its design resembles a jacket with a high neck. The design of the Afghani salwar contains extensive zari and bead work and is finished off in a complementary colored dupatta.

4.  Sharara Salwar:

This type of salwar features wide legged pants that are similar to a Sharara dress. Under a flowy kurta, the legs resemble a full skirt but they are worn with tied drawstring. This salwar style is available in light to heavy embellishments. Due to its flowy design, this is an extremely comfortable salwar style to wear.

5.  Trouser Salwar:

This salwar style features a unique Indo-Western twist. The kurta is long and straight cut, with a semi-collar that resembles a dress shirt. The length of the kurta can vary from just below the knee to a few inches above the ankle. This kurta style is worn with a pair of trouser-style pants and complemented by a simply dupatta. The trouser style salwar contains fewer embellishments than other types, but it is suitable for dinner parties and birthday celebrations.
